In1703, a deed recorded inBarbados referenced a distillery at theMount Gay estate in St. Lucy —the earliest documented evidence of rumproduction anywhere in the world. For323 years, Mount Gay hasbeen distilling rum on the same site, through colonialism and emancipationand independence, through wars and recessions and theentire modern history ofspirits, without ever once printing anage statement on any ofits bottles. The decision to agewithout advertising it was deliberate —a confidence in thequality of the blending rather than themarketing of the number.
That changeswith the Exceptionally AgedCollection, released in June 2026. Forthe first time in its history, the world's oldest continuouslyoperating rum distillery hasengraved an age on its label. Notbecause anything in theproduction philosophy has changed, butbecause what Trudiann Branker — thefifth Master Blender in Mount Gay'smodern history and thefirst woman to hold the role on theisland — found in these casks wasextraordinary enough to deserve it.
The 15 Year Old's storyis a story of inheritance. The rum wasdistilled around 2010 on a singlecolumn still by then-Master BlenderJerry Edwards, who had spent yearslaying down stocks of aged rumwith a specific vision for the future.Stewardship passed to Allen Smith, hissuccessor. Then to Trudiann Branker, who monitored its continuedevolution until, in 2025, sheidentified this particular blend asthe one — the expression that mostcompletely embodied what a 15-year-oldMount Gay rum should be. Noadded sugar from must to bottling. Noflavoring of any kind. Every dropdistilled, matured, blended, andbottled at St. Lucy, Barbados.
Under the island's tropical climate, theangel's share devours casks at a ratethat temperate climates cannot approach— a 10 to 15% loss to evaporationannually means that reaching fifteenyears in a Barbadian warehouse isgenuinely and measurably rare, notsimply the kind of rarity thatmarketing departments invent. Only4,942 bottles exist worldwide.Rumporter, tasting early, found"vanilla, a floral touch, coconut, cinnamon and nutmeg, over ripe bananaand toasted almond" on the nose, and"butterscotch, creamy vanilla, plum anda lively orange zest" on the palate, with "a very long, cocoa-tinged finishlifted by a pinch of sea salt." TheSpirits Business described "zestygrapefruit, comforting buttery pastry, butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel.""Conceived as a generous rum to share,"in the words of its own creator — "atthis age, value for money is one of itsstrongest arguments."
Three hundredand twenty-three years of rum history.Three Master Blenders across a singlerum. Four thousand nine hundred andforty-two bottles. One age on thelabel, for the first time ever.
MountGay was founded in 1703 in St. LucyParish, Barbados — the world's oldestcontinuously operating rum distillery, predating most of the rum industry'sother foundational institutions bydecades. The estate is owned today byRémy Cointreau and operated by a teamthat maintains an unbrokenthree-century production tradition onthe original site. Trudiann Brankerserves as current Master Blender, thefifth in Mount Gay's modern era and thefirst woman to hold the role on theisland of Barbados, trained for fiveyears alongside her predecessor AllenSmith before assuming the role.
TheExceptionally Aged Collection wasconceived from the understanding thatgenerations of Mount Gay MasterBlenders had been quietly laying downexceptional stocks — not to be soldimmediately, but to be held, watched, and eventually recognized by theirsuccessors as worthy of somethingspecial. The 15 Year Old was distilledapproximately in 2010 by then-MasterBlender Jerry Edwards on a singlecolumn still. Stewardship passed toAllen Smith for the middle years of itsmaturation, and ultimately to TrudiannBranker, who brought the final visionto fruition in 2025. Every barrel inthe blend used ex-American oak bourboncasks exclusively throughout the entireaging period — a deliberate choice thatBranker describes as honoring theoriginal vision by producing "an idealintensity and complexity, as close aspossible to the taste of the cask."
Barbados's tropical climate is the defining environmental factor in thisrum's character. At 10 to 15% annualevaporation in the tropical warehouseheat, reaching fifteen years of age onthe island is genuinely exceptional —which is why these barrels werespecifically identified and protectedacross multiple generations ofstewardship. The result is bottled at43% ABV / 86 proof with no added sugar,no added flavoring, and no dilutionbeyond the natural process ofmaturation. One hundred percentdistilled, matured, blended, andbottled in Barbados. Only 4,942 bottlesexist worldwide.
Rumporter (confirmed extended tasting note, advance taste):
"On the nose, the bourbon-cask imprint is remarkablyprecise, never showy: vanilla, a floraltouch, coconut, cinnamon and nutmeg, over ripe banana and toasted almond. The palate confirms it — generous andrich, without the slightest harshness:butterscotch, creamy vanilla, plum anda lively orange zest — through to avery long, cocoa-tinged finish liftedby a pinch of sea salt. Conceived as agenerous rum to share. At this age, value for money is one of its strongestarguments."
The Spirits Business (confirmed):
"It offers aromas of zesty grapefruit, comforting buttery pastry, and tastesof butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel."
88 Bamboo (confirmed official tasting notes):
"Nose: Tart cherry, richvanilla and warm oak, contrasted by seasalt, citrus, and dark chocolate.Palate: Sweet raisin, rich toffee, cinnamon, and earthy roasted nuts, withnuances of orange zest, citrus, nutmeg, cocoa and spiced gingerbread."
Trudiann Branker, Master Blender, Mount Gay:
"The Exceptionally AgedCollection is a profound tribute to the320 years of heritage and to thegenerations of blenders before me whopossessed the vision to lay down theseincredible rums. These rums offer ataste as close to what comes directlyfrom the barrel as possible, a perfectrepresentation of our legacy and theunique tropical climate of Barbados."
Nose
The bourbon-cask imprint is remarkablyprecise, never showy. Vanilla leadswith warm, rounded sweetness — theex-American oak's most gentle and mostspecifically integrated contributionafter fifteen years. A floral touchadds aromatic lift. Coconut adds themost distinctly tropical and the mostspecifically Barbadian secondary note —a quality that cool-climate aged rumssimply cannot replicate. Cinnamon andnutmeg add warm bakingspice. Ripe banana and toasted almondadd a deeper, slightlydried-fruit complexity thatspeaks directly to the tropical agingenvironment. Zesty grapefruit andtart cherry addfresh citrus brightness, alongsidecomforting buttery pastry and hints ofdark chocolate.
Palate
Generousand rich, without the slightestharshness — the most specificallynotable and the most consistentlyremarked-upon quality of this rum, thefifteen years of tropical maturationhaving rounded every edge while theno-added-sugar commitment keeps thesweetness honest rather than confected.Butterscotch and creamy vanilla carrythe mid-palate with genuine richness.Plum and orange zest add vivid fruitbrightness. Sweet raisin, rich toffee, and spiced gingerbread build throughthe back palate, with earthy roastednuts and nutmeg adding textural andspiced complexity.
Finish
Verylong and cocoa-tinged, lifted by apinch of sea salt at the very close —the most specifically memorable and themost genuinely Barbadian finishingnote, the island's maritime terroirmaking itself felt in the glass. Silkyand long, with the sea salt and cocoacarrying through to a clean, honestresolution.
