PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The 15 Year Old carries the story of a generational handover — a rum watched across three Master Blenders, three sets of hands, three distinct perspectives on what Mount Gay could become. The 25 Year Old tells that same story, but the numbers are different. Distilled in 1999, it takes us back to the dawn of the 21st century and a new millennium — and across a full quarter century under the Barbadian sun, with 10 to 15% of its volume lost to evaporation every single year, there wasn't much left. Only 2,376 bottles exist worldwide, a direct testament to the small number of casks that Jerry Edwards originally filled in 1999 and to twenty-five years of tropical angel's share consuming what time and heat inevitably claim.

Jerry Edwards distilled this rum on a single column still at the dawn of a new millennium, when Caribbean aged rum was just beginning to gain the kind of serious attention it now commands. He laid it down in ex-American oak bourbon casks with a specific vision for the future — not his future, necessarily, but the future of whoever inherited the responsibility of watching it. That responsibility passed to Allen Smith, his pupil and successor, who shaped the middle years of this rum's maturation alongside his own landmark release, the 1703 Master Select. And it passed finally to Trudiann Branker, the fifth Master Blender in Mount Gay's modern history and the first woman to hold the role on the island — trained for five years alongside Smith, she brought this shared vision to fruition and oversaw its bottling in January 2026.

"A rum distilled under one, aged under another, selected by the third: three generations in a single glass" — the most precise and the most poetic description available for what this bottle actually is. The nose leads with vanilla and red fruits, rich caramel and dark chocolate, balanced by hints of citrus. The palate delivers raisin, warm cinnamon, and tangy citrus. Long and silky on the finish. No added sugar from must to bottling. No flavoring of any kind. One hundred percent Barbados, from distillation to bottle. Forty-seven percent ABV — bottled closer to cask strength than any standard Mount Gay expression, because the rum earned it.

Origins & Craftsmanship

The Exceptionally Aged 25 Year Old is a single-batch rum distilled in 1999 by then-Master Blender Jerry Edwards at the Mount Gay distillery in St. Lucy, Barbados — the world's oldest continuously operating rum distillery, founded in 1703 and operating on the same site for more than three centuries. Edwards used a single column still and placed the rum exclusively in ex-American oak bourbon casks, a commitment to a single cask type maintained without exception across the entire twenty-five years of maturation.

The tropical climate of Barbados is the defining environmental fact of this rum's rarity. At 10 to 15% annual evaporation — the "angel's share" consumed by Barbados's heat and humidity — a cask filled in 1999 had lost the substantial majority of its original volume by the time Trudiann Branker selected it for bottling in 2025. The small number of casks originally filled in 1999, combined with that attrition rate across twenty-five years, is the direct explanation for why only 2,376 bottles exist — and why this is, as every trade source that has written about this release agrees, a true rarity in the rum world at this age.

Stewardship across the maturation period passed through three distinct hands: Jerry Edwards, who distilled and laid down the rum; Allen Smith, his successor, who monitored its middle years; and Trudiann Branker, the current Master Blender, who identified this batch as the pinnacle expression and oversaw both the final blending and the bottling in January 2026. The rum is bottled at 47% ABV — higher than the 15 Year Old's 43% — a proof point selected to deliver what Branker specifically describes as "a taste as close to what comes directly from the barrel as possible." No added sugar. No flavoring. Every drop distilled, matured, blended, and bottled in Barbados.

Critics Reviews

Rumporter (confirmed extended tasting note, advance taste — 25YO specific):
"Distilled in 1999, the 25-year-old takes us back to the dawn of the 21st century and a new millennium. A rum distilled under one, aged under another, selected by the third: three generations in a single glass."

The Spirits Business (confirmed — 25YO tasting notes):
"The nose leads with aromas of vanilla and red fruits, complemented by rich caramel and balanced by hints of citrus and dark chocolate, with tasting notes of raisin, warm cinnamon, and tangy citrus."

88 Bamboo (confirmed official tasting notes — 25YO):
"Nose: Tart cherry, rich vanilla and warm oak, contrasted by sea salt, citrus, and dark chocolate. Palate: Sweet raisin, rich toffee, cinnamon, and earthy roasted nuts, with nuances of orange zest, citrus, nutmeg, cocoa and spiced gingerbread. Finish: Long and silky."

Trudiann Branker, Master Blender, Mount Gay:
"The Exceptionally Aged Collection is a profound tribute to the 320 years of heritage and to the generations of blenders before me who possessed the vision to lay down these incredible rums. With both the 15 and 25-year-old, we chose to honour that original vision by ageing them exclusively in ex-Bourbon casks, resulting in a desired intensity and complexity that beautifully matches the heritage we are so proud to carry."

Nick Ganich, Marketing Director, Rémy Cointreau:
"As consumers continue to seek out premium spirits that offer authenticity and craftsmanship, these new expressions, crafted and aged in Barbados, provide a taste of the very best of Barbados rum-making."

Tasting Profile

Nose
The bourbon-cask imprint at twenty-five years is deeper and more concentrated than the 15 Year Old — the same fundamental ex-American oak character, but with an additional decade of tropical integration producing greater density and complexity. Vanilla leads with rich, oak-derived warmth. Red fruits — tart cherry and ripe plum — add the most vivid and the most specifically complex fruit dimension. Rich caramel adds deep sweetness. Dark chocolate and sea salt provide the most structured and the most specifically contrasting secondary aromatics. Citrus brightness cuts through the richness, preventing the nose from becoming simply heavy.

Palate
Sweet raisin leads the entry — the concentrated dried-fruit character of twenty-five years of tropical maturation most directly and most memorably apparent. Rich toffee adds further sweetness and depth. Warm cinnamon and spiced gingerbread build through the mid-palate. Tangy citrus and orange zest provide brightness and acidity. Earthy roasted nuts add savory complexity. Nuances of nutmeg, cocoa, and a tangy citrus thread carry through to the finish. At 47% ABV, the rum is fuller and more assertive than the 15 Year Old — bottled close enough to cask strength to deliver genuine presence without harshness.

Finish
Long and silky — the most specifically and the most consistently noted finishing quality across every review of the 25 Year Old. The cocoa, citrus, and sea salt carry through a close of genuine length and refinement. The 25 years in Barbados's tropical climate resolve in a finish of extraordinary smoothness for a spirit of this proof — twenty-five years of angel's share and barrel interaction producing exactly the elegant close that Branker's three-generation vision promised.
