PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Mount Gay's Single Estate Series began with an eight-year journey: in 2015, the Rémy Cointreau-owned distillery purchased its own dedicated estate in St. Lucy, Barbados, specifically to grow sugarcane for rum production — not sugar — and to prove, batch by batch, that Barbadian terroir could be tasted as directly and as specifically in rum as it can in fine wine or Scotch. The inaugural release, Batch 23_01, launched in 2023 as a blend of cane from two separate harvests, 2016 and 2017. This release, 24_02, is the genuine breakthrough moment for the series: the first true single-vintage expression, made entirely from sugarcane harvested in a single year.

"What makes 24_02 different and special is that it is the first vintage in the Single Estate Series, coming from just one year of harvest," said Master Blender Trudiann Branker. "23_01 was a blend of two harvest years, 2016 and 2017. 24_02 showcases the unique character of Mount Gay's Estate in a single year, made with 100% sugarcane grown on the Estate." The batch code itself tells the story directly: "24" marks the release year, "02" its place in the series, "Vt18" the 2018 vintage harvest, and "d2" the fact that Branker blended together two distinct pot still distillations from that single fermentation. Fermentation itself ran unusually long — nine days, against Mount Gay's standard four — triggering a secondary fermentation that produced genuinely distinctive Barbadian flavor notes rarely found in the distillery's other rums, particularly pineapple and guava. The 2018 harvest held real personal significance for Branker: it was her first year working at the estate, supervising sugarcane production. "That year, we had 3 mechanical harvesters and we started the harvest in Bishops Field... the weather cooperated! The sun was very hot and the harvest was smooth."

Fully distilled in copper pot stills, aged five years in ex-bourbon barrels, and bottled at a robust 55% ABV / 110 proof with no added sugar or color and no filtration, this rum earned genuinely enthusiastic praise from two of the spirits world's most respected independent critics. Paste Magazine found it "boldly fruity and expressive, even in comparison with the first 23_01 batch," with "big, bright citrus" as the keystone, "notes evocative of orange oil and grapefruit, but also a lot of banana, vanilla cream, milk chocolate and hazelnut," calling it flatly "one of the year's best rum releases." Christopher Null of Drinkhacker, a 25-year veteran spirits journalist, was equally taken: "really fruit-forward, not just redolent with notes of flambéed banana but also citrus... 24_02 really raises the bar and shows this series coming into its own. It's easily one of the top rums of the year." With only 5,418 bottles produced worldwide — just 1,200 of which reached the US — this is a genuinely rare, critically celebrated statement of Barbadian rum terroir.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Mount Gay Rum's Single Estate Series is produced entirely from sugarcane grown at the Mount Gay Estate in St. Lucy, Barbados, purchased by Rémy Cointreau, the brand's parent company, in 2015 specifically to cultivate cane for rum production rather than sugar. The estate sits on the plateau of the Upper Coral Reef terrace, a landform lifted from the ocean roughly 400,000 years ago, with altitude ranging from 105 meters on the west side to 150 meters on the east, and soil dominated by clay.

Batch 24_02 (formal code: 24_02_Vt18d2) is the second release in the Single Estate Series and the first to be crafted from a single year's harvest — the 2018 vintage — rather than blended across multiple years. The cane underwent an unusually extended fermentation of nine days, roughly double the distillery's typical four-day process, which triggered a secondary fermentation and produced flavor characteristics distinctive to this specific harvest, including notes of pineapple and guava rarely found elsewhere in Mount Gay's range. The rum was fully distilled in copper pot stills under Master Blender Trudiann Branker, then aged five years in ex-bourbon barrels, with no added sugars, colors, or flavoring, and no filtration. Bottled at 55% ABV / 110 proof, in packaging built from 70% recycled glass with a blue label inspired by the summer skies of the 2018 harvest season. Total worldwide production was limited to 5,418 bottles, with 1,200 allocated to the US market.

Critics Reviews

Paste Magazine (extended independent review):
"On the nose, this one is boldly fruity and expressive, even in comparison with the first 23_01 batch. Big, bright citrus is a keystone, with notes evocative of orange oil and grapefruit, but there's also a lot of banana, vanilla cream, milk chocolate and hazelnut. The ethanol is likewise very restrained and gentle for the 110 proof, allowing you to really work out the individual notes on both the nose and the palate. Again, the depth of fruitiness really stands out in a showstopping way. To be honest, I liked last year's first release in the Single Estate Series, but this second expression is on another level. The amount of pure flavor and character that Mount Gay has packed into a 5-year age stated rum that isn't even at full cask strength is absolutely exceptional. This is a joy to drink, and it can't help but make any rum geek excited for where the distillery's experiments in sugar cane farming will continue to go from here. At the end of 2024, this will be one of the year's best rum releases."

Christopher Null, Drinkhacker (extended independent review):
"Such a different experience here: Really fruit-forward, not just redolent with notes of flambeed banana but also citrus. There's lots of spice and vanilla to add nuance, plus a gentle turn of earth — though never heavy or overblown with the terroir. The essence of the molasses is front and center, emerging as a lightly pruny, darker fruitiness. All of the above hit the palate, though perhaps in reverse: The pruny note provides an immediate slick of dark black fruit, smeared with gritty molasses and dark chocolate. As exciting as the original Single Estate Series 23_01 was, 24_02 really raises the bar and shows this series coming into its own. It's easily one of the top rums of the year."

Mount Gay (official tasting note):
"Light golden color. Bold citrus, sweet fruit aromas, grapefruit, sweet plums, banana, almonds, sea salt, and milk chocolate. Brown sugar, oak, grapefruit, floral notes and salty smokiness."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Light golden hue. Bold citrus leads — orange oil and grapefruit — joined by sweet plums, flambéed banana, and vanilla cream. Almonds, sea salt, and milk chocolate add depth, alongside hazelnut and a gentle turn of earth.

Palate
Fruit-forward and richly layered, with a pruny, dark black-fruit slick smeared with gritty molasses and dark chocolate. Brown sugar and oak carry structure, joined by lots of spice and vanilla nuance. Ethanol remains notably restrained and gentle despite the full 110-proof strength, letting each individual note come through clearly.

Finish
Salty smokiness and grapefruit linger, closing with floral notes and a lasting depth of fruitiness — a genuinely showstopping close for a five-year-old rum bottled below true cask strength.
