The Naud family has been in the spirits business for five generations, since 1856, following in the footsteps of Émile Perrier, a famous maker of fruit liqueurs. In the 1980s, Jean-Michel Naud, a trained oenologist, passionate explorer of wines and spirits, and son-in-law of Robert Perrier, rediscovered the family’s distillery, which sits hidden on its own island in the Charente. With his son Pierre, he revived it to produce Cognac and, in 1999, built the first vodka distillery in the Charente region, using wheat. Today the distillery produces a full range of Cognacs, VS to Extra.
Extra is the top of the line, and it’s built from the cellar’s best old stocks. In the family’s words: “To elaborate Naud Cognac Extra, we went deep down into our family cellars to seek out our oldest eau-de-vie. We selected each quality for its particular and exuberant character.” Only a few rare eaux-de-vie qualify, and under the supervision of Jean-Michel and Pierre, “each batch is tasted separately before being assigned to its final destination.” It’s a blend of crus, bottled at 42.3% ABV (84.6 proof), a little above the standard 40%, which gives the old spirit more presence.
The official tasting notes: “Mahogany with old gold hints. The nose has notes of candied orange and quince, moving on to aromas of mocha and cedar wood combined with a rising rancio perfume. The start is bold and follows on to persistent notes of orange peel, leather and tobacco. A slightly vanilla toasted finish which boasts melted and well-structured tannins.” The importer calls it “a strong and masculine Cognac,” and a retailer describes the finish as “lingering vanilla, oak, and rancio notes.” No professional scores were found.
Rancio is the key word: the savory, nutty, mushroomy, old-leather depth that develops in Cognac that has aged for decades, and that Cognac connoisseurs prize. This is the style for them: structured, tannic in the best way, orange-peel bright and tobacco-dark, and very different from the sweeter, softer, vanilla-forward XOs. A tulip glass, neat, at room temperature, with a few minutes to open. It’s a good Cognac for an after-dinner cigar, a gift for the Cognac drinker who has everything, and a good-value Extra at its tier.
Naud Extra Cognac is produced by the Naud Family Distillery in the Charente, Cognac, France (Jean-Michel and Pierre Naud; family distillers since 1856), a blend of the oldest and rarest eaux-de-vie from the family cellars. Bottled at 42.3% ABV / 84.6 proof, 750ml.
