PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Nicolas Potel is the son of the legendary Gérard Potel of Domaine Pousse d'Or, and has built his own maison's reputation on a genuine specialty: finding "affordable" vineyards of real quality that produce Burgundies within reach of the everyday consumer — wines from what one wine writer called Potel's "expert" eye for lesser-known but genuinely exciting appellations. Côte de Nuits-Villages sits squarely in that category: a regional appellation drawing from a handful of villages at the northern and southern edges of the celebrated Côte de Nuits, offering real access to the same ancient limestone escarpment that produces the Côte d'Or's most famous Grands Crus, at a considerably more accessible price point.
That escarpment itself has a genuinely remarkable geological story — hundreds of millions of years ago, the region now called the Côte d'Or sat beneath a warm ocean, and the layers of limestone, sandstone, and clay left behind as that seafloor shifted and decomposed over eons now form the exact terrain running north to south through Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée, and Nuits-Saint-Georges — the same geological backbone that shapes Côte de Nuits-Villages fruit as well.
Nicolas Potel is a Burgundian winemaker, son of the highly respected Gérard Potel of Domaine Pousse d'Or, and one of a new generation of vinificateurs redefining the role of négociant in the region. Maison Nicolas Potel has built its international reputation on sourcing fruit from some of Burgundy's most beautiful, and often more affordable, vineyard sites, producing Villages, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru wines prized for the purity of their fruit and their authentic sense of place.
Côte de Nuits-Villages is a regional appellation covering a handful of villages at the northern and southern extremities of the Côte de Nuits, in Burgundy's Côte d'Or. This 2023 vintage is 100% Pinot Noir, sourced from within that appellation.
