Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old Single Malt Japanese Whisky 750ml

In 2015, Nikka made a genuinely difficult decision: as demand for Japanese whisky exploded worldwide and aged stocks ran perilously short, the company discontinued the 10, 12, and 15-year age statements on its flagship Yoichi single malt, replacing them with a permanent, no-age-statement expression in 2016. For nearly a decade, that felt like a permanent loss for whisky lovers who had come to treasure the specific character a full ten years of Hokkaido maturation gave the spirit. Then, in early 2023, Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs designated ten buildings at the Yoichi Distillery as "Important Cultural Properties" of Japan — and Nikka responded by bringing the 10-Year-Old age statement back, the first age-stated whisky to return to Nikka's US portfolio in several years.

Yoichi is Nikka's very first distillery, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru — the father of Japanese whisky — who chose the town of Yoichi in Hokkaido specifically for its climate, remarkably similar to Scotland's, where he'd learned the craft firsthand. The distillery remains one of the very few in the world still practicing traditional coal-fired direct distillation in its pot stills, a genuinely rare, hands-on method that most modern distilleries abandoned decades ago.

The Whiskey Wash's Jennifer Williams, a 15-year bartending veteran, found the returned 10-Year pouring "yellow gold," with "bright fruit notes hit the nose first, followed by notes of honeysuckle, vanilla, lemon zest, juicy pear, yellow rose petals, and a touch of fresh cut oak." The palate delivered "soft notes of warm spices, golden raisins, slightly buttery vanilla bean, mint, and very subtle hints of smoke on the backend." The Whiskey Shelf described "round maturity generated over years, integrated with distinctive peaty, well-balanced woody and delicate herbaceous notes." According to Nikka, production is now ongoing, with limited quantities released annually at select retailers — a genuinely hard-won return for one of the most storied names in Japanese whisky.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Yoichi Distillery is Nikka's first and oldest distillery, established in 1934 by founder Masataka Taketsuru — the figure widely credited as the father of Japanese whisky — who selected the town of Yoichi on the northern island of Hokkaido specifically because its cool, coastal climate closely resembled Scotland, where he had trained in the craft.
