Taketsuru Pure Malt is the most emblematic whisky in the Nikka range, a blend of single malts from its two distilleries, named for the company’s founder, Masataka Taketsuru, widely considered the Father of Japanese Whisky. It was created in 2000, and Nikka marks the run-up to its 30th anniversary in 2030 with the Taketsuru Pure Malt Essentials series, a five-part, annual, limited-edition collection, with each release exploring a different aspect of the whisky’s identity and carrying its own label.
The first release, Essentials 2026, goes back to where Nikka began: Yoichi, the distillery on the island of Hokkaido that Taketsuru founded in 1934, famous for its direct coal-fired stills, a rare technique that gives the spirit its powerful, smoky, structured character. The blend combines Yoichi’s single malt with Miyagikyo’s single malt (built in 1969, and known for “finesse, roundness and fruity notes”), and it includes rare batches distilled at both distilleries in 2000, the year Taketsuru Pure Malt first appeared. The result emphasizes “the rich maltiness of the mature stocks and Yoichi’s characteristic peaty notes while retaining the balance of single malts that defines Taketsuru Pure Malt.” It’s bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof), the same strength as the original, and the label, as the one on your bottle shows, is dominated by Yoichi’s signature traditional Japanese indigo blue.
Nikka’s official notes describe aromas of cereal “malted and lightly toasted,” with “freshly baked biscuit,” “tangy apricot jam,” and “soft woody notes,” and a finish that is “long and lingering,” with “delicate peaty notes” and “a subtly bitter touch of cask.” Retailer notes describe the palate as “smooth and balanced, with a sweet malt core, fruity accents, and a subtle spicy depth,” and one reviewer found an earthy finish with white chocolate, white pepper, and toasted grains. It’s a measured, malt-focused dram, an examination of structure instead of excess, in Nikka’s words.
Only 1,200 bottles were released in the US, in select markets, beginning in late September 2026, and there are no independent reviews yet. It’s a collector’s bottle at the start of a five-year series, and a thoughtful, balanced, gently peaty Japanese malt for drinking. Enjoy it neat or with a few drops of water, or over a large cube.
