PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
In the darkest corners of storied warehouses, a 20-year-old whiskey sat in used barrels, forgotten by everyone except time. Orphan Barrel has now called those last casks back together for the Latverian Cask, a once-only release inspired by Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in theaters December 18. It is named for Latveria, the homeland of Doctor Doom, and it’s built from the final remaining barrels of this whiskey, “never to be blended again.” Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.
The liquid is a rarity in its own right. This is a Light Whiskey, a niche American class defined by the TTB as whisky distilled at more than 160 proof and aged in used or uncharred new oak. The Latverian Cask is almost 100% corn, distilled in Indiana to a formidable 189 proof, then aged for twenty years in used oak barrels, primarily at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Kentucky, with some barrels aged in Indiana. It was crafted by Diageo’s Master Blender of US Whiskey, Andrew Mackay, and bottled in Bardstown at 92 proof (46% ABV). Because it’s distilled so light and aged in used wood, the oak plays a supporting role, and the whiskey gets its depth from time instead. In the label’s words: “Time shaped its intensity into depth and structure.”
The official tasting notes are a nose of caramel and sweet vanilla; a palate of honey, butterscotch, orange peel, and oak; and a warm finish of creamy vanilla and dried fruit. It’s soft, sweet, and easy to sip, with none of the rye bite or char of a bourbon. Orphan Barrel suggests serving it neat or over a small ice cube.
The bottle is designed to be collected. The front label, with original artwork by comic book artist Rod Reis in collaboration with Marvel Studios, is packed with movie details: the green stained-glass motif from Doctor Doom’s Doomstadt Castle, the castle flanked by statues of Doom, runes from the castle along the border, a gold border and diamond shape inspired by Doom’s throne, and iconography from his cape. It’s built for whiskey fans who chase discovery and rarity, and for Marvel fans who want a collectible, and it makes an easy gift ahead of the film.
