Pahlmeyer 2017 Merlot

"The 2017 Merlot is plump, juicy and absolutely delicious. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, new leather and lavender all jump from the glass as this rich, seductive Merlot shows off its alluring personality. Still recovering from its very recent bottling, the 2017 needs time to bounce back - but truthfully, it is already absolutely delicious and will be very easy to enjoy with minimal cellaring." "The 2017 Merlot, bottled at the beginning of September, delivers evocative notions of warm black plums, blackberry pie, mulberries and fruitcake with hints of tar, charcuterie, black olives and cracked black pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate practically prances with lively black fruit preserves and savory accents, framed by rounded tannins and loads of freshness, finishing long and fruity.

These 2017s are pre-fire wines, as Pahlmeyer made the difficult decision to discard everything that came in after the fires. The 2017s are therefore very small production, but impressive wines. As something of a double whammy, the home estate was also impacted by smoke taint issues in 2018 on their higher elevation vineyard on Atlas Peak. This time it was the wind carrying smoke from the Mendocino fires that year that had a detrimental effect, blanketing the vineyard right at veraison. Limited to what they could use for fruit, there is no estate fruit in the 2018 Pahlmeyer. Instead, Upper Range vineyard was used for the first time this year, constituting about 60% of the wine. Upper Range is a relatively new, higher elevation project based just to the side of Pritchard Hill, overlooking Lake Hennessy. If this wine is any indication of what that vineyard can give, it’s pretty exciting news." Robert Parker 93 Points
