PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Pasanau family has cultivated vineyards in Priorat for centuries, and Ceps Nous is sourced from the estate's most dramatic plots — several parcels at the very base of the sheer rock wall of the Serra de Montsant, near La Morera de Montsant, genuinely the highest vineyards anywhere in D.O.Q. Priorat, at roughly 2,300 feet elevation. That altitude, combined with gravelly scree eroded from the surrounding cliffs covering the region's signature llicorella slate, creates a notably less Mediterranean microclimate than Priorat as a whole, with Pasanau's "Finca La Planeta" experiencing the widest daily temperature variation anywhere in the entire region — real diurnal swing that helps retain freshness and tension in the fruit even as it ripens under Priorat's demanding sun.
The 2022 growing season brought a mild winter with little rain, earlier budding, and flowering at the end of June; a notably warm summer then pushed the hand harvest to begin at the end of August. Grapes are entirely Grenache, destemmed, crushed, and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 17 days with daily stirring, then aged 7 months in 225-liter French oak barrels before bottling in April 2024. Farming is sustainable, with organic vineyard management and genuinely minimal intervention winemaking.
The estate's own winemaker's notes describe "brilliant deep red with purple highlights," with "concentrated aromas of black fruit with balsamic notes, leading to red fruits and vanilla," the palate showing "blackberry, raspberry and blueberry flavors with red currant," "well balanced with firm to smooth tannin and mineral notes on the finish." Guia Penin's tasting confirms "deep cherry" color, with "ripe fruit, dried herbs, creamy oak, black fruit, smoky, mineral" aromatics, the flavor "powerful, ripe fruit, spicy, round tannins, fruity, flavourful, full of life." Spain Finest Wine's tasting describes "a pleasingly dense flavor profile, but very lifted and light on its feet," with "juicy black cherry and blackberry" alongside "subtle baking and wood spices," calling it "very much Priorat but drinkable now with really nice complexity and length." This is genuinely serious, high-altitude Priorat — real tension and structure from the single highest vineyard site in the entire appellation.
Pasanau 2022 Ceps Nous Priorat is produced by the Pasanau family, headed by Jordi Pasanau, with winemaker Sandra Doix, at their estate near La Morera de Montsant, Priorat, Catalonia, Spain. The wine is made entirely from Grenache, sourced from several vineyard plots at the base of the Serra de Montsant rock precipice — the highest vineyards in all of D.O.Q. Priorat, at approximately 2,300 feet elevation, on sandstone conglomerate soils with lime cement, planted in 2000.
Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, crushed, and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 17 days with daily stirring, then aged 7 months in 225-liter French oak barrels, bottled in April 2024. Vineyards are sustainably farmed using organic, minimal-intervention methods. Bottled at 15% ABV, with annual production around 2,916 nine-liter cases.
