Penelope Bourbon started on a golf course. In 2018, founders Michael Paladini and Danny Polise worked out the idea for the brand over 18 holes, and Architects of Golf is the brand’s tribute to that round. As Paladini puts it, “Penelope started as an idea on a golf course, so we felt it was only natural to expand our Architect line into this area.” The collection launched in May 2026 with Holes 1, 2, and 3, and continues with Holes 4, 5, and 6, which this bundle collects.
Each hole is a separate batch of the same aged straight bourbon, finished with American oak staves in a different way: the stave finishing techniques are “implemented at different intensities and over different lengths of time,” so each bottle builds on the last, “reflecting the progression of a round of golf itself.” As Danny Polise, Penelope’s Master Blender, says: “Each hole represents a distinct batch. They are designed to explore the nuances of different stave profiles and how they evolve the whiskey.” Retailer listings describe the bourbon as six years old, built on Penelope’s signature four-grain mash bill (corn, wheat, rye, and malted barley), non-chill filtered, and bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV), a deliberately gentler strength than Penelope’s high-proof Architect series.
The series’ notes describe a progression from lighter and sweeter to deeper and more oak-driven: Hole 1, for example, “opens with aromas of caramel and butterscotch layered with baking spices and nutmeg,” with dark chocolate, sweet oak, and roasted nuts on the palate, while Hole 3 is “the powerhouse of the trio,” with “robust stave influence,” chocolate mousse, dried red fruit, and concentrated toasted oak. Penelope’s own notes for the collection speak of “gentle vanilla and light toasted oak” at the soft end, “toasted oak with balanced vanilla” and “deeper spices for more depth” in the middle, and “a longer, more complex close” at the more structured end. Holes 4, 5, and 6 continue that exploration. Together, the three make a natural side-by-side tasting, and the golf-themed labels make the set a gift for golfers, bourbon collectors, and anyone who wants to taste how oak staves change the same whiskey.
