Pietradolce was founded in 2005 by Michele Faro on Mount Etna's northern slope, widely considered the volcano's own "Grand Cru" zone — higher in elevation, with steeper, rockier soils and a genuinely cooler microclimate that lets grapes ripen slowly while retaining real nerve and tension. Faro's own family history runs deep in this exact soil: they operate Piante Faro, one of Sicily's largest plant and ornamental tree nurseries, and the winery itself takes its name from his grandfather's affectionate term for the porous, lightweight Etna lava-stone substrate the family worked with in their nursery decades before the wine project ever began — "pietra dolce," meaning "sweet stone."

Archineri is the estate's single-vineyard flagship, made entirely from Nerello Mascalese sourced from a genuinely remarkable 90-year-old, pre-phylloxera vineyard in Contrada Rampante, at 850 meters elevation, planted with ungrafted vines that have never needed replanting despite the phylloxera epidemic that devastated most of Europe's vineyards over a century ago. Pietradolce farms entirely organically, with biodynamic-leaning practices, relying on old vines harvested by hand and fermented with a genuinely light touch — the wine spends roughly 18 days on the skins, fermented in concrete tanks, then ages 14 months in tonneaux, about 10% new oak.
