Marilyn Monroe had a lot to say about Piper-Heidsieck, and none of it was subtle. "I go to bed with just a drop of Chanel No. 5 and wake up with a glass of Piper-Heidsieck," she famously declared, and by most accounts she meant it — she reportedly kept a month's supply of the Champagne in her own kitchen, ordered it by the case, and once scrawled "To Piper, My Favorite" across a bottle in her own hand. To mark the centennial of her birth in 2026, Piper-Heidsieck released this limited-edition cuvée in direct partnership with the Marilyn Monroe Estate and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures — her portrait and signature printed directly on the label, layered over the house's signature gold foil and crimson band.
The wine itself is Piper-Heidsieck's own classic Brut NV, dressed up in genuinely fitting company for a woman whose taste in Champagne became part of her legend. It's built from a blend majority Pinot Noir for structure, Pinot Meunier for fruit and fleshiness, and Chardonnay for elegance and acidity, sourced from more than 100 crus across the Champagne region — a formula the house has relied on since Florens-Louis Heidsieck founded the trading company in 1785, driven by a self-taught ambition "to create a cuvée worthy of a queen." He personally presented his wine to Queen Marie-Antoinette that same year, and the house has carried royal and celebrity favor ever since, through fourteen royal court appointments and, eventually, straight into Old Hollywood.
One journalist covering the release captured the spirit of the whole project directly: "in classic Piper-Heidsieck style, notes of orchard fruit, citrus, and brioche dance atop a fine, silky mousse in the Marilyn Monroe Cuvée. It's delightful without being overly complex — a Champagne better suited for a party than a serious wine tasting. It's as voluptuous and irresistible as Miss Monroe herself." The official tasting notes describe pale gold with fine, persistent bubbles, opening with fresh pear, white peach, citrus, and orange blossom, followed by toasted bread, fresh almonds, and mint — elegant, fresh, and harmonious, closing on a clean, refined, refreshing finish. Cellar Master Emilien Boutillat, who became the youngest cellar master of a major Champagne house at just 31 when he took over in 2018, oversees the same base blend that's earned the standard Cuvée Brut 90 points from Robert Parker and 92 from Wine Spectator across its regular release. This is a Champagne built for celebration — glitz, glamour, and one of Hollywood's most enduring love affairs with a single bottle, bottled for one very specific anniversary.
Piper-Heidsieck was founded in 1785 in Reims by Florens-Louis Heidsieck, a self-taught draper's son from Westphalia who fell in love with Champagne wine and set out, in his own words, "to create a cuvée worthy of a queen" — an ambition he fulfilled the same year, personally presenting his wine to Queen Marie-Antoinette. The house passed to the Hériard-Dubreuil family in 1988, and was acquired in 2011 by EPI, a family holding company specializing in wine and luxury goods, led by Christopher Descours. Régis Camus served as cellar master from 2002 to 2018, passing the role to Emilien Boutillat, who became the youngest cellar master of any major Champagne house at age 31.
The house built a genuine following among Hollywood's elite in the mid-20th century, most famously with Marilyn Monroe, who was widely rumored to keep a month's supply of the Champagne in her own kitchen and reportedly ordered it by the case. This Marilyn Monroe Edition is a limited-release cuvée built on Piper-Heidsieck's classic Brut NV — a blend majority Pinot Noir, with Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, drawn from more than 100 crus across the Champagne region — released in 2026 to honor the centennial of Monroe's birth, in direct partnership with the Marilyn Monroe Estate and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The bottle carries her portrait and signature on the label, layered over the house's traditional gold foil and crimson band.
No numerical critic score is confirmed for the Marilyn Monroe Edition specifically at this time. The base Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Brut has been scored 92 Points by Decanter and 92 Points by Wine Spectator.
