Piper-Heidsieck did something genuinely bold with Riviera: it built a Champagne specifically meant to be poured over ice, a proposition that would make plenty of traditional Champagne drinkers wince — and did exactly that on purpose. VinePair's own feature on the house explained the thinking directly: "Piper-Heidsieck was brave enough to risk some serious drinks-shaming, creating a Champagne specifically meant to be enjoyed on ice." The wine takes direct inspiration from sunlit afternoons at Cannes and St. Tropez, and Piper-Heidsieck's own copy leans fully into that mood: "a nod to the French Riviera where the art of living blends with the vibrant pleasure of bubbles... inspired by sunlit days and seaside cocktails, this champagne illustrates that elegance can also be spontaneous and playful."
Piper-Heidsieck itself dates to 1785, one of the oldest continuously operating Champagne houses, now part of EPI, the wine and luxury conglomerate led by Christopher Descours, since 2011. Cellar Master Emilien Boutillat, who took over production in 2018 at just 31 years old — making him the youngest cellar master at any major Champagne house at the time — crafts Riviera from a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier, sourced from more than 50 individual crus across the Champagne region, with a minimum of 25% reserve wine blended in and at least 24 months of lees aging. Riviera is bottled Demi-Sec, carrying roughly 35 grams per liter of dosage — deliberately sweeter than a standard Brut, a choice built specifically to hold up against ice dilution without losing its flavor.
Piper-Heidsieck's own current tasting notes describe the wine opening with "aromas of fresh pineapple, grapefruit zest, and white flowers," the palate "lively and intense, with flavors of lemon sorbet, pear, and a hint of crushed mint." A slightly different retailer description of the same wine describes "vibrant aromas of orange, lychee, and yellow peach sorbet" transitioning "into subtle notes of vanilla and fresh melon," recommending it be enjoyed "over ice, accompanied by a hint of citrus or ginger." This is a genuinely playful, deliberately unconventional Champagne — built for warm-weather terraces and poolside afternoons rather than a formal toast.
