Planteray’s Terravera Collection explores rum through the lens of terroir: single-origin vintage rums from one distillery in one country, aged in the tropics and then finished in Europe. The Belize 2008 is the third release in the series, and the first to appear under the Planteray name. Planteray is the rum brand of Maison Ferrand, the Cognac house in Charente, France, and the Belize edition is a distinctly English-style rum from a single column-still distillery.
The rum was distilled in 2008 from molasses at Travellers Liquors in Belize, in a multi-column still, after 3 to 4 days of fermentation. It then spent 13 years aging in the tropical heat in 200-liter ex-bourbon casks in Belize City, where the climate speeds maturation and concentrates the flavor. It was then shipped to France for 2 more years in 350-liter Ferrand Cognac casks in Javrezac, in a cooler environment that adds polish. It was bottled in 2023 at 48.3% ABV (96.6 proof) from only 19 casks, with a small dosage of 8 g/L and an ester level of 92 g/hL AA. It’s a one-time release, and the brand has not announced a repeat.
The official tasting notes describe a nose that “opens on very old bourbon notes with intense and spicy cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, roasted almonds, leather, cocoa, honey and banana,” a palate of “citrus and pear, caramel, coconut, pepper, cloves, licorice and tobacco,” and a finish that is “long on dried fruits, cherry, vanilla, coffee and gentle vegetal notes.” One importer describes “lots of power, rich and creamy with a slight hint of sweetness,” with “big notes of dried fruit, caramel, coconut, tobacco and banana.”
Rum drinkers have responded enthusiastically. One Rum Ratings reviewer found it “kinda reminiscent of a Barbados style of rum from Richard Seale: treacle and honey notes mixed with a serious barrel burn.” Another called it “a great example of what rum can be,” noting “it’s clean tasting, and the hint of oak is mild, but more importantly it’s just oak, not the soggy wine barrel oak taste that happens too often in long-aged rums,” and said that “the 15 years of aging ensures it goes down silky smooth,” and “for those who like English-style rums, this is a great limited edition rum to experience.” It’s a collector’s bottle for rum fans and a fine sipping rum for whiskey and Cognac drinkers.
