Poderi Luigi Einaudi carries genuine historical weight in Piedmont — the estate was founded in 1897, when Luigi Einaudi, then just 23 years old, acquired the San Giacomo farmhouse in Dogliani, surrounded by roughly 40 acres of vineyard. Einaudi himself went on to become the second President of the Italian Republic, and the family estate he founded now celebrates 125 years of continuous winemaking, still farmed with the same commitment to quality he brought to it from the very start.
This Barolo Cannubi comes from one of the appellation's most celebrated crus — Cannubi's own vineyards sit at roughly 220 meters elevation, south and southeast facing, on soils of grey and white Sant'Agata marl, rich in sand. Wine-Searcher's own notes on this exact bottling point out something genuinely distinctive about the estate: though Einaudi's winemaking is technically performed outside the Barolo denomination itself, in neighboring Dogliani, the estate is grandfathered into the system, allowing it to continue producing genuine Barolo from some of the appellation's very best growing sites. The wine ferments in steel and concrete under strict temperature control, undergoes post-fermentation maceration, and matures several months in oak barrel before a long period of further bottle aging.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded a remarkable 96 Points, describing this as "one of Poderi Luigi Einaudi's historic productions," noting the wine is "streamlined and silky in texture, but it shows enough inner tension and energy to support a busy bouquet with elements of wild berry, blue flower and dusty mineral," concluding it "shows that classic Cannubi weightlessness," with just 9,600 bottles produced. Wine Enthusiast's own blind tasting found the wine "flies out of the glass as if it is on a mission," with "aromas of mixed red berries, fresh roses, anise, clove and thyme" swirling in the glass, calling it "elegant and refined, yet bold and giving," "a pure beauty that has a purity of fruit, minerality and structure." CellarTracker's community has rated the vintage an average of 91 points across confirmed reviews, with one professional tasting from K&L describing it as "soft, facile, plush fruit" and "very approachable," while noting it "didn't exhibit the depth and complexity" of the estate's Bricco delle Viole bottling, but remained "a very enjoyable wine in its own right." This is genuinely well-reviewed, historically significant Barolo — real elegance and precision from one of Cannubi's most respected producers.
Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Cannubi 2019 is produced by Poderi Luigi Einaudi, founded in 1897 in Dogliani, Piedmont, by Luigi Einaudi, who later served as President of the Italian Republic. The estate now celebrates 125 years of continuous winemaking under the Einaudi family. This Barolo is made entirely from Nebbiolo grapes, sourced from Cannubi, one of Barolo's most celebrated single-vineyard crus, at approximately 220 meters elevation, south/southeast facing, on grey and white Sant'Agata marl soils rich in sand.
Grapes ferment in steel and concrete tanks under strict temperature control (29-31°C), followed by post-fermentation maceration and racking after 22 to 25 days. Malolactic fermentation is induced by maintaining the right temperature, and the wine matures several months in oak barrels, followed by a long further period of bottle aging before release. Production totaled 9,600 bottles for the 2019 vintage.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate — 96 Points:
"This is one of Poderi Luigi Einaudi's historic productions. This estate enjoys some of the best growing sites in the appellation despite the fact winemaking is performed outside the denomination on Dogliani. This estate is grandfathered into the system. The 2019 Barolo Cannubi is streamlined and silky in texture, but it shows enough inner tension and energy to support a busy bouquet with elements of wild berry, blue flower and dusty mineral. This wine shows that classic Cannubi weightlessness. Some 9,600 bottles were made."
Wine Enthusiast:
"This wine flies out of the glass as if it is on a mission. Aromas of mixed red berries, fresh roses, anise, clove and thyme all swirl in the glass. Elegant and refined, yet bold and giving, the wine is a pure beauty that has a purity of fruit, minerality and structure."

K&L Wines (extended professional tasting note):
"2019 Barolo Tasting: Soft, facile, plush fruit and was very approachable. I would say this is still firmly modern." Another tasting adds: "We found the 2019 Einaudi Cannubi to be an open and generous Barolo. It didn't exhibit the depth and complexity of the 16 Bricco delle Viole consumed before it, but was a very enjoyable wine in its own right."
