PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Joe Grilli brought an Italian winemaking sensibility to McLaren Vale and built a family estate around the conviction that good food and great wine are essential to celebrating life — that every day should be lived con brio, with passion. Primo Estate is the result: a family-owned winery in South Australia's McLaren Vale producing a range of wines, including the celebrated JOSEPH label, that reflect that Italian heritage filtered through one of Australia's most storied Shiraz-growing regions.

The Shale Stone Shiraz takes its name directly from the ground it comes from — grapes grown specifically in the Vale's shale stone rock, a geological signature that Primo Estate credits directly for the wine's elegant perfume and savoury texture. This is not a generic regional blend; it is fruit selected for the specific character that this particular rock formation imparts. One longtime customer, who has dealt with Primo Estate for over thirty years, calls it simply his favorite: "a quality wine at a good price" that "continually receives compliments from the people I share it with."

The bouquet delivers blackberry fruit layered with classic McLaren Vale spice — the peppery, slightly savoury signature that defines the region's finest Shiraz. On the palate, rich plum and dark chocolate flavours unfold with smooth, round texture. This is, in Primo Estate's own words, McLaren Vale Shiraz at its finest — drinking beautifully now in 2026, seven years from vintage, but built to age for years to come.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Primo Estate is a family-owned winery in McLaren Vale, South Australia, founded and run by Joe Grilli, whose winemaking philosophy draws directly on his family's Italian heritage. The estate is best known internationally for its JOSEPH range, but the Shale Stone Shiraz represents the more straightforwardly McLaren Vale-focused expression in the portfolio — a wine built specifically to showcase what the region's distinctive shale stone soils can do for Shiraz.

McLaren Vale sits on the Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide, where Gulf St. Vincent's maritime influence moderates the otherwise warm South Australian growing season, and where the region's varied geology — including the shale stone formations this wine is named for — produces Shiraz of notable depth, spice, and structure. The shale stone vineyard sites Primo Estate sources from contribute the elegant perfume and savoury texture that distinguish this bottling, with grapes vinified to preserve the fruit's natural richness while integrating oak for structure and complexity.

Tasting Profile

Nose
Elegant perfume with savoury texture — the shale stone terroir's most direct contribution. Blackberry fruit leads, layered with classic McLaren Vale spice — peppery, slightly savoury, unmistakably regional. Tobacco and nuanced oak add secondary complexity.

Palate
Smooth and rich, with rich plum and dark chocolate flavours carrying the core. A peppery quality runs through the mid-palate, balanced by the chocolate and plum richness. The texture is round and approachable without sacrificing structure.

Finish
Attractive balance between chocolate and plum, with the savoury, spiced character lingering. A wine to savour — drinking beautifully now, with the structure to continue developing for years.
