PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The 2020 Asili Riserva from Produttori del Barbaresco is a beautifully refined single-vineyard Nebbiolo, offering a compelling blend of elegance and depth. With bright, floral Nebbiolo character supported by firm structure and refined tannins, this wine is equally suited for near-term enjoyment and long-term cellaring.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Produced by the cooperative winery Produttori del Barbaresco in Piedmont’s Barbaresco appellation (Italy), this bottling comes from the celebrated “Asili” cru—an historic single-vineyard site known for its sandy-limestone soils and exceptional Nebbiolo expression. The 2020 vintage benefits from cool evenings late into September, preserving freshness and acidity. Grapes were hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts, and aged as a Riserva (in larger Slavonian-oak casks) for the required period before bottling. The result is a wine with distinctive terroir imprint, typicity of Nebbiolo and long-term ageing potential.

Critics Reviews

  • According to Kerin O’Keefe (Wine Enthusiast), “I always find the Asili to be most fragrant of the Produttori single-vineyard Riservas and the stunning 2020 doesn’t disappoint… offering alluring aromas of dog-rose, eucalyptus, new leather, forest floor and woodland berry along with a whiff of sun-warmed hay… Loaded with finesse… Drink 2026–2032.” Score: 97 points

  • Number 7 on the list of the Vinous Top 100 wines of 2025 with a score of 98 Points!  Vinous Media (Antonio Galloni) awarded the wine 98 points, noting “The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is gorgeous. It offers a beguiling mix of intense fruit and supporting structure. A wine of depth and complexity… It is clearly a step or two above many of the wines in this range.”

  • Jeb Dunnuck also scored it 96 points, writing: “The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is a slightly darker ruby color and is a bit firmer in character compared to Paje’ and Mucagotta… The palate… captures the polished, smooth, ripe tannins, and it’s long on the palate, with a very slowly floating finish.”

  • Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave 95 points, observing: “The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili shows terrific balance and freshness thanks to cold evenings that lasted to the end of September… This wine is more profound as a result, with soft tannins, a linear texture and well-defined mouthfeel.”

  • Wine Spectator rated it 95 points, describing it as “a dense, energetic style, boasting cherry, blackberry, plum, earth and tobacco flavors. Dense and enlivened with resonant tannins that define the long, sinewy finish. Tar and licorice accents emerge on the aftertaste. Best from 2029 through 2047.”

  • Decanter Magazine also scored it 95 points, noting: “Black raspberry and currants are infused with violet essence… sublime layers of generosity then firm, fine tannins drive through to the intense, stony-mineral finish.”

These critic assessments consistently place the 2020 Asili Riserva in the top tier of the vintage for Barbaresco, praising its finesse, structure and ageing potential.

Tasting Profile

Nose: Fresh and refined, with aromas of rose petal, wild raspberry and Morello cherry, subtle violet florals, eucalyptus leaf and hints of forest floor and leather.
Palate: Medium to full‐bodied, showing bright cherry and raspberry fruit, a saline minerality beneath, star anise and blood-orange peel accents, interwoven with firm yet graceful Nebbiolo tannins.
Finish: Long, poised and persistent — dry tannins lead into earth, licorice root, crushed rocks and a fine chalky texture, supported by lively acidity that keeps the finish crisp and persistent.

The 2020 Produttori del Barbaresco Asili Riserva is a masterclass in Nebbiolo elegance—think rose petals, wild berries, and a whisper of spice, all wrapped in silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Crafted from the esteemed Asili vineyard, this wine offers a harmonious blend of depth and finesse, making it a standout in any cellar. 250 cases imported.

"The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili shows terrific balance and freshness thanks to cold evenings that lasted to the end of September. Asili is not far from Pora, and both sites share similar sandy soils. However, Asili is cut off from the warm air currents of the Tanaro River. This wine is more profound as a result, with soft tannins, a linear texture and well-defined mouthfeel. The 2020 vintage is more accessible overall, but you get the profound depth that Nebbiolo offers. This was the fifth of nine wines presented in the Riserva series. Therefore, it falls somewhere in the middle of the power continuum in terms of intensity and richness."Robert Parker 95 Points

"A dense, energetic style, boasting cherry, blackberry, plum, earth and tobacco flavors. Dense and enlivened with resonant tannins that define the long, sinewy finish. Tar and licorice accents emerge on the aftertaste. Best from 2029 through 2047." Wine Spectator 95 Points
