PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Albariño from Galicia is one of Spain's most celebrated and most internationally recognized white wine stories — cool Atlantic coast, granite soils, the breath of the sea, a grape that expresses maritime minerality better than almost any other variety grown anywhere. Raimat's Albariño begins from an entirely different premise: not the Atlantic coast, not granite, not the wet, green landscape of Galicia's Rías Baixas. Costers del Segre, Lleida — the continental interior of Catalonia, where the Pyrenees stand to the north, where summer temperatures can be fierce, where day-to-night temperature swings are dramatic rather than oceanic, and where the same family has been farming the same 2,245 hectares since 1914.

That this Albariño works — and works this well — is the most genuinely interesting thing about it. The continental climate's dramatic diurnal variation, which might seem inhospitable to a grape typically associated with coastal freshness, instead concentrates the variety's aromatic compounds into something with real presence and genuine complexity. Wine Enthusiast awarded the 2025 Montviu Albariño 95 Points, finding melon and apricot with tart strawberry, white pepper, and a pleasantly drying mineral note. The 2024 vintage received 90 Points from Wine Enthusiast, who found citrus blossoms and honeysuckle carrying into flavors of mango with lemon and sea salt — "creamy, almost unctuous, yet balanced with mouthwatering acidity — friendly and delicious."

The production philosophy behind these results is genuinely and specifically craft-oriented. Two vineyard parcels, harvested separately at their individual optimal ripeness. Fermented separately — the coolest parcel at low temperature to extract the most vivid citrus character, the second with daily batonnage on lees to build creaminess and texture. A small percentage aged over ten months in barrel for additional aromatic complexity and vanilla depth. The result captures the Albariño variety's most vibrant qualities — citrus, stone fruit, white flowers, mineral backbone — while the Catalan continental character adds a specific fullness and amplitude that the variety's purely coastal expressions don't always achieve. Europe's largest single-family vineyard. 100% certified sustainable. Albariño reimagined from Catalonia. 95 points.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Raimat was established in 1914, when Manuel Raventós i Domènech — owner at the time of the historic Codorníu, one of Spain's most celebrated Cava producers — acquired land in the Lleida region of Catalonia that was, at the time, arid and barren. A costly and extensive process of desalination, soil conditioning, and hydraulic engineering followed, with water sourced from Pyrenean snowmelt channeled to irrigate what has become one of Europe's most extraordinary wine estates. Today Raimat is the largest vineyard in Europe owned by a single family — 2,245 hectares of 100% certified sustainable vineyards within the Costers del Segre DO, constituting on its own a specific recognized sub-zone within the denomination. The estate's continental climate features dry summers, strongly contrasting day-to-night temperatures, and a Mediterranean influence that tempers the inland heat while preserving the dramatic diurnal variation that concentrates aromatic compounds.

The Albariño, labeled Montviu in some markets, is produced from two vineyard parcels that are harvested separately when each reaches optimal individual ripeness. Winemaking is deliberately multi-technique: the coolest parcel is fermented at low temperature in stainless steel to extract and preserve the most volatile citrus aromatics — lime, grapefruit — in their freshest and most vivid form. The second component undergoes lees fermentation with daily batonnage, building the creamy texture and fuller palate weight that distinguishes Raimat's Albariño from simpler, single-tank expressions. A small percentage of the wine ages for more than ten months in barrel, contributing vanilla depth and woody complexity before blending. The estate's 100% certified sustainable viticulture extends through water management systems, bird habitat preservation, and strict environmental certification.

Critics Reviews

Wine Enthusiast — 87 Points:
"Showing ripeness to its melon and apricot fruit, with some tart strawberry giving a lift. White pepper and a pleasantly drying mineral note come in on the finish. Has enough acidity to keep the profile perky enough."

Reverse Wine Snob (2025 Raimat Albariño):
"The 2025 Raimat Albarino opens with pleasing aromas of tropical fruits plus melon, green apple and tangerine. It's an attractive start."

Raimat official tasting notes:
"Bright, straw yellow with green highlights. Great aromatic complexity; aromas of citrus — lime and grapefruit — at the start. As the wine opens up, notes appear of stone fruits, such as nectarine, and subtle hints of white flowers on a mineral background."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Bright straw yellow with green highlights — the continental Lleida terroir and the low-temperature fermentation of the coolest parcel producing a color of genuine freshness and vitality. Melon and apricot open the nose with the most specifically ripe and the most generous fruit expression — the continental climate's most directly apparent contribution, the dramatic temperature swings concentrating aromatics in a way that coastal sites rarely achieve. Tart strawberry adds a lifting, slightly unexpected red fruit secondary note that distinguishes the 2025 from simpler Albariño profiles. Lime and grapefruit carry the most vivid and the most immediately refreshing citrus character from the cool-fermented parcel. Nectarine adds warm stone fruit depth. Subtle white flowers add the most delicate and the most characteristically Albariño-varietal aromatic secondary quality. Tropical fruits — mango and guava — add warmth.

Palate
Broad, fresh, and full of texture — the lees-fermented component with daily batonnage most directly apparent in a creamy, almost unctuous mouthfeel that balances the wine's natural acidity. Mango with lemon and sea salt carries the most specifically and the most memorably complex mid-palate character. Mouthwatering acidity keeps the wine genuinely perky despite its textural fullness. White pepper adds a warm, slightly peppery secondary note that adds genuine complexity without bitterness. The barrel-aged component's vanilla depth adds quiet richness at the back half.

Finish
White pepper and a pleasantly drying mineral note carry the close most persistently — the Catalan continental terroir's most specifically and the most memorably distinctive finishing quality, providing a clean, appetite-stimulating conclusion that genuinely distinguishes this from both richer white Burgundy styles and more austere Galician Albariño.
