PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Redemption has built its name on rye-forward whiskey, so it makes sense that its flagship aged release is a high-rye bourbon. The Barrel Proof 10 Year Old uses the same distillate and mash bill as Redemption’s core High Rye Bourbon, 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley, but with a decade in new American oak and bottled at barrel proof without chill filtration. The distillate is MGP-distilled in Indiana to Redemption’s recipe, a respected source of rye-heavy mash bills.
The whiskey is dark gold, “flecked with crimson,” and Redemption says that “although it’s bottled at barrel proof, it’s impressively smooth.” It’s a limited release, and as with any barrel-proof bourbon, the exact proof varies from batch to batch (110 to 115), so this bottle comes in at 113.4 proof, or 56.7% ABV. The ten years in the barrel give it an age statement that’s rare for a rye-heavy bourbon.
The official tasting notes describe a nose of “rich vanilla oak with hints of aged balsamic and violets”; a palate where “toffee, honey and roasted nut flavors dominate, layered atop a spicy rye backbone”; and a finish that is “moderately drying with rich allspice and dill base notes.” Reviewers describe the same character: Adventures in Whiskey found “a boost in the spice department” on the nose, with “baking spices,” and “slightly darker caramel, vanilla bean and espresso,” adding that, at barrel proof, it doesn’t need water. The Whiskey Shelf called an earlier batch “a superb caramel and vanilla bomb that deftly outdoes other excellent bourbons such as Elijah Craig Barrel Proof and Stagg Jr,” finding “fragrant and dense caramel, freshly squeezed orange, toasted vanilla cream, baked apples, cinnamon, clove, fennel, roasted oak, and tobacco.” Whisky Monster was more mixed: he noted “nutmeg, cream custard, toffee, honey, and grapefruit zest” on the nose, but found the palate “thinner than expected,” with “cardamom, cinnamon, licorice, allspice, blackberries, and elderberry,” and still called it a “must-buy for high rye lovers.”
It’s a bold, spicy, sweet bourbon for fans of high-rye whiskey, with the age and proof of much more expensive bottles. Try it neat first, then with a few drops of water, or in an Old Fashioned or Manhattan, where the rye spice stands up well.
Redemption Barrel Proof 10 Year Old High Rye Bourbon is a straight bourbon distilled at MGP in Indiana to Redemption’s high-rye recipe (60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley), aged 10 years in new American oak, and bottled non-chill filtered at barrel proof. This bottle is 56.7% ABV / 113.4 proof (proof varies by batch), 750ml. Limited release.
