Lytton Springs is one of California’s most storied Zinfandel vineyards. The vines were first planted between 1901 and 1910 in Dry Creek Valley, as a classic field blend, with Zinfandel interplanted with Petite Sirah, Carignane, and other old varieties. Ridge’s Paul Draper first saw the vineyard in 1972, when it was already 80 years old, and bought grapes for Ridge’s first Lytton Springs bottling that year. In 1991, on the twentieth anniversary of that first vintage, Ridge bought the winery and the old vines around it, making Lytton Springs a true estate vineyard. The soils in the flatlands are gravelly loam, with the oldest vines, while the hill has more clay, and the vineyard is now organically grown.
The 2024 is a blend of 78% Zinfandel, 13% Petite Sirah, 6% Carignane, 2% Alicante Bouschet, and 1% Grenache, made by winemaker Shauna Rosenblum (the daughter of Zinfandel pioneer Kent Rosenblum), who ferments each block separately and then chooses the best lots to go into this bottling. A brief heat spike in July challenged the Carignane and Petite Sirah, but the Zinfandel handled it without difficulty. The wine is 14.5% ABV.
The winemaker’s tasting notes describe “a nose of brambly raspberry, anise, French vanilla and sage,” with “flavors of plum, boysenberry, mineral and dark chocolate” that “meet chewy tannins and a long finish.” Critics have been enthusiastic. Zinfandel Chronicles scored it 97 and called it “a monumental effort.” James Suckling scored it 95, calling it “one of the most structured, concentrated and powerful of Ridge’s old-vine zinfandel-dominant reds.” Wine Enthusiast scored it 95 and named it a Cellar Selection: “Aromas of baked cherry, tart raspberry, toasty brioche, cracked pepper, and flowers swirl on the nose of this iconic Old Vine Zinfandel blend.” For context, the previous vintage, the 2023, was named #3 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2025, the highest ranking ever for a California Zinfandel, which has put the label in the spotlight.
The 3-liter double magnum holds four bottles of wine, about twenty glasses, and it’s the right size for a big table: a holiday dinner, a barbecue, a milestone celebration, or a wine-dinner centerpiece. Large formats are also widely believed to age more gracefully, and Lytton Springs often holds for more than a decade. It’s a rich, peppery, brambly red that pairs with barbecue, burgers, grilled sausages, braised short ribs, and aged cheeses. The critic scores above are for the 2024 vintage in standard bottles.
Ridge 2024 Lytton Springs is produced by Ridge Vineyards from the Lytton Springs estate vineyard in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County, California, an organically grown field blend of 78% Zinfandel, 13% Petite Sirah, 6% Carignane, 2% Alicante Bouschet, and 1% Grenache, from vines planted between 1901 and 1910. Made by Shauna Rosenblum, with each block fermented separately and aged in American oak. 14.5% ABV, presented here in a 3000ml double magnum, equal to four standard bottles.
Scores are for the 2024 vintage in standard bottles; the double magnum contains the same wine.
