PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted in Philadelphia. On that same day, in that same city, the Liberty Bell — already cracked, already legendary — was rung as part of the celebration. And somewhere in the streets of Philadelphia, people were drinking rye whiskey. Not Scotch. Not bourbon. Rye — the grain spirit that was, for the first century of American independence, as specifically and as completely American as any food or drink produced on the continent. Pennsylvania rye whiskey, specifically — the Monongahela tradition of the western Pennsylvania valleys, where rye-dominant mash bills, local water, and the specific culture of Scots-Irish and German immigrant distillers produced a whiskey that financed farms, greased commerce, and defined what American spirits tasted like before Kentucky's limestone water and corn-dominant mash bills established a different tradition.

This Bourbon is limited to one bottle per customer.

Rittenhouse Rye carries that Philadelphia heritage in its name: named for Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia's most elegant urban park, itself named for David Rittenhouse — astronomer, clockmaker, first director of the United States Mint, and one of the founding generation's most accomplished scientific minds. The brand was created in 1934, the year after Prohibition ended, by Continental Distilling Corporation in Philadelphia — a post-Prohibition revival of the Pennsylvania rye tradition that Heaven Hill acquired in 1999, relocating production to Bardstown, Kentucky while maintaining the mash bill and the Bottled-in-Bond standards that the brand's identity has always required.

The 250th Anniversary Edition is the most significant release in Rittenhouse's 92-year commercial history. Ten years old — more than twice the standard Bottled-in-Bond minimum — non-chill filtered, drawn from 90 carefully selected barrels aged across multiple rickhouses and floors at Heaven Hill's Bernheim Distillery in Louisville. "This special release is a tribute not only to America's 250 years of independence, but also to the enduring legacy of rye whiskey in our country's history," said Molly Vincent, Heaven Hill's Associate Director of Luxury Whiskeys. The Liberty Bell packaging makes it explicit: this bottle is a commemorative object as much as it is a whiskey. A toast to 250 years with the spirit that the founding generation actually drank.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Rittenhouse Rye was created in 1934 by Philadelphia's Continental Distilling Corporation — a post-Prohibition revival of the Pennsylvania rye tradition that had been one of the defining characteristics of American distilling for more than a century before the Volstead Act ended it in 1920. Named for Rittenhouse Square — the elegant park in Center City Philadelphia named for David Rittenhouse, the founding generation's most accomplished astronomer and the first director of the United States Mint — the brand honored both the place and the intellectual tradition of Philadelphia's founding culture.

Heaven Hill Distillery acquired the Rittenhouse brand in 1999 and has produced it at the Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky ever since — maintaining the Bottled-in-Bond standards and the mash bill that define the brand's identity while bringing the quality and consistency of Heaven Hill's production infrastructure to bear on what had become an obscure and undervalued American whiskey category. Heaven Hill's investment in Rittenhouse Rye is among the most commercially significant decisions in the brand's history: the standard Bottled-in-Bond expression became one of the most beloved and most widely used rye whiskeys in American bartending culture, and the 250th Anniversary Edition represents the long-term aging capability that Heaven Hill's commitment to the brand makes possible.

The 250th Anniversary Edition is the most specific and most carefully assembled Rittenhouse release ever produced. The mash bill — 51% rye, 35% corn, 14% malted barley — is the same formula that has governed Rittenhouse production since the Heaven Hill era. The 51% rye minimum meets the legal requirement for straight rye whiskey and provides the bold, spicy character that defines the Rittenhouse house style. The 35% corn adds natural sweetness and mid-palate richness. The 14% malted barley contributes the enzymatic conversion activity required for fermentation alongside a slightly nutty, biscuity complexity in the finished spirit.

Ten full years in new charred American oak — more than double the standard Bottled-in-Bond minimum of four years — at Heaven Hill's Bernheim Distillery, where the Louisville urban heat island and the multiple rickhouse environments create a maturation program of genuine diversity. The 90 barrels selected for the 250th Anniversary Edition were drawn specifically from multiple rickhouses and floors — a deliberate multi-environment selection that captures the full spectrum of what 10 years in Heaven Hill's warehouse system produces in a 51% rye mash bill whiskey. Non-chill filtered, preserving the natural oils and congeners that give the finished whiskey its full-bodied texture. Bottled at exactly 100 proof — the Bottled-in-Bond Act's most specific and most historically authenticated quality requirement. The Liberty Bell packaging — a commemorative design specifically created for this release — makes every bottle a physical object of the 250th Anniversary celebration.

Critics Reviews

No published tasting notes or critic scores are available for the Rittenhouse 250th Anniversary Edition specifically at this time given its May 2026 release date. The following notes characterize the Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond house character and the expected flavor development at 10 years of age from multiple confirmed sources.

Curiada (standard BiB house character): "Flavors of toasted nuts, dark chocolate, and dried fruits emerge. The 100 proof gives a warming sensation without overwhelming heat. Finish: Long and dry. Lingering notes of rye spice, oak tannins, and black pepper."

Boozenetworks.com (10 Year 250th Anniversary review): "The 10-year aging has imparted a depth and complexity not typically found in younger rye expressions. Hints of vanilla and caramel from the oak, balanced by the inherent spiciness of the rye grain."

Difford's Guide (standard BiB): "Aroma: Nutty, old wardrobe oak with varnish, turpentine, banana, faint cherry, vanilla and lanolin."

Heaven Hill official 250th Anniversary description: "Composed of a mashbill of 51% rye, 35% corn, and 14% malted barley. Non-chill filtered and drawn from 90 carefully selected barrels aged across multiple rickhouses and floors, this release reflects both craftsmanship and patience."

Molly Vincent, Heaven Hill Associate Director, Luxury Whiskeys: "This special release is a tribute not only to America's 250 years of independence, but also to the enduring legacy of rye whiskey in our country's history. Rittenhouse has long stood as a symbol of the bold character of classic Pennsylvania rye."

Tasting Profile

The following profile builds from the confirmed Rittenhouse BiB house character, the 10-year maturation's expected flavor development, and the multi-rickhouse barrel selection architecture.

Nose Clear, deep coppery amber with warm gold highlights — 10 years of Heaven Hill's multiple-environment warehouse aging producing a color of genuine richness and depth. The nose opens with the Rittenhouse house character at its most fully developed: the 51% rye mash bill's bold, slightly wild grain spice arriving first with the warm, slightly medicinal quality that aged rye whiskey develops after extended oak contact. Vanilla and caramel from the 10-year American oak aging add the richly integrated sweetness that the standard 4-year BiB's younger oak delivers more sharply and more directly. Toasted nuts and biscuity malted barley add secondary aromatic depth. Dark cherry and dried fruits build from the interaction of rye grain compounds and decade-old American oak. Faint chocolate and dark cocoa add the most specifically 10-year contribution — the aged tannin transformation into something more complex and more specifically satisfying than the younger expression's more direct character. Banana and vanilla lanolin round the whole aromatic picture with a richness that the standard expression at 4 years does not fully achieve.

Palate Full-bodied, bold, and considerably more integrated than the standard Rittenhouse BiB — the 10-year maturation's most directly apparent palate contribution in a mouthfeel of genuine richness and structural completeness. The rye spice arrives first with the characteristic Rittenhouse boldness — warm cinnamon, black pepper, and the slightly medicinal herbal quality that high-rye mash bills develop most specifically in American oak. But the 10-year oak's presence is equally immediate: the vanilla and caramel integration far more complete than the 4-year expression achieves, the tannin balance more harmonious, the overall impression of greater depth and greater unity between the grain and the wood character. Dark fruit — dried cherries, plums, and a hint of raisins — builds through the mid-palate alongside dark chocolate and toasted oak tannins. The 100-proof concentration delivers full-intensity warmth throughout — present and building but never harsh, the decade of barrel integration having softened the rye's most aggressive edges into something genuinely complex and genuinely rewarding.

Finish Long, dry, and spice-driven — the Rittenhouse BiB house style at its most extended and most complex expression. Rye spice and oak tannins carry the close most persistently alongside black pepper and dark chocolate — the 10-year version's most enduring and most characterful finish contributions, considerably more complex and more sustained than the 4-year's cleaner, simpler close. Dried fruit notes persist faintly alongside vanilla and a final whisper of nutmeg. The non-chill filtration's natural oils add a slightly warming, slightly coating quality at the very end. The finish confirms what the 10 years and 90 selected barrels promised: this is Rittenhouse at its most fully realized.

Serving & Occasion

Neat at room temperature in a Glencairn or rocks glass — the 10-year rye spice, dark fruit, and oak integration are most vivid and most fully expressed without dilution. Allow 10 to 15 minutes of air for the full aromatic complexity to develop — the decade of barrel aging revealing its layered character progressively. A few drops of water opens the vanilla and dark fruit notes while softening the rye spice's most assertive edge. A single large ice cube works beautifully for a slower pour where the chocolate and dried fruit deepen as the temperature drops. The Liberty Bell packaging makes this an exceptional occasion bottle for any Independence Day, national holiday, or American heritage celebration — and the 10-year BiB quality makes it worthy of every glass poured from it.

Cocktail Suggestions

Anniversary Manhattan (the definitive rye serve) 2 oz Rittenhouse 250th Anniversary · 1 oz sweet vermouth · 2 dashes Angostura bitters · Luxardo cherry. Stirred over ice, served up in a chilled coupe. The rye spice and dark fruit carry through sweet vermouth's botanical complexity in a Manhattan of unusual depth — the 10-year oak integration adding a richness and harmony that younger Rittenhouse expressions approach from a more direct, more aggressive angle.

Improved Whiskey Cocktail (the historic serve) 2 oz Rittenhouse 250th Anniversary · 1 tsp simple syrup · 2 dashes Angostura bitters · 1 dash absinthe or Pernod · lemon twist. Stirred over ice, served up. The pre-Prohibition cocktail format that rye whiskey was specifically created to anchor — the absinthe adding the anise complexity that the founding generation's bartenders understood as the perfect counterpoint to Pennsylvania rye spice.

Rye Old Fashioned 2 oz Rittenhouse 250th Anniversary · 1 tsp Demerara syrup · 2 dashes Angostura bitters · 1 dash Peychaud's bitters · expressed orange peel. Stirred over a large ice rock. Demerara mirrors the dark fruit and vanilla, Peychaud's adds the New Orleans anise complement to the rye spice, and the orange peel amplifies the dried fruit dimension that the 10-year aging produces.
