PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
In 1996, someone at Ron Carúpano filled a set of casks and, for reasons the distillery has never fully explained, let them evolve in a way that set them apart from everything else in the family's private reserve. What makes this particular rum genuinely singular within the entire Carúpano range is the aging itself: it's the only expression the house produces that matures across two separate sealed ex-bourbon casks rather than one, an unusual double-cask journey that stretched, in total, up to 24 years. No replenishment of the angel's share along the way — whatever the tropical Venezuelan climate claimed to evaporation over those two and a half decades was simply left to concentrate everything that remained.
Ron Carúpano traces its roots to the Macarapana Valley in eastern Venezuela, near the coastal city of Cumaná in Sucre state — a region that has been producing rum for more than 260 years, shaped by the humid Hacienda Altamira and the tranquil waters of the Chuare River. Reserve Vintage 1996 draws directly from the owner's family private reserve, selected specifically because these particular casks developed in a way the distillery's own team judged too remarkable not to bottle. The result is released once a year, in a strictly limited run of only 5,000 crystal decanters worldwide — a genuinely scarce allocation for a rum of this age and this depth.
The distillery's own tasting notes describe a dark, intense amber color with orange highlights, dense and bright in the glass. On the nose: caramel, amyl alcohol, fennel, candied and macerated fruits, almonds, cinnamon, tonka bean, coconut, cacao nibs, cigar box, and roasted notes of coffee and gentle smoke. On the palate: strength, elegance, and genuine personality, with a perfect balance evident from the very first sip — toffee, dates, and prunes alongside almonds, the wood elevated just enough to fill the mouth without ever overwhelming it. Best enjoyed in a proper tasting glass, or over a single large ice cube with a hint of smoke or citrus to draw out its rich, deeply aged character. This is Venezuelan rum at its most patient and most genuinely rare — two casks, nearly a quarter century, and only 5,000 bottles a year to show for it.
Ron Carúpano is one of Venezuela's most historically significant rum producers, based in the coastal city of Cumaná in the Sucre state of eastern Venezuela, in the Macarapana Valley — a region whose rum-making tradition stretches back more than 260 years. The distillery is known throughout the category for its commitment to extended aging, traditional production methods, and the exceptional quality of its reserve and vintage-dated expressions, all matured in sealed American white oak barrels under Venezuela's stable, humid tropical climate — conditions that accelerate maturation and concentrate flavor at a pace temperate climates cannot replicate.
Reserve Vintage 1996 is distinguished within the Carúpano portfolio as the only product in the entire range aged across two separate sealed ex-bourbon casks rather than a single barrel — a genuinely unusual production choice that allowed the rum to mature for up to 24 years total. The casks were filled in 1996 and sourced directly from the owner's family's private reserve; during the extended aging process, they developed distinctive sensory characteristics that led the distillery's team to select them specifically for this limited annual bottling. No replacement of the angel's share occurs during maturation, allowing the rum's flavor compounds to concentrate naturally over the full aging period rather than being diluted or replenished. The finished rum is bottled at 40% ABV in 700ml crystal decanters, presented with a gift tube, in a strictly limited annual release of just 5,000 bottles worldwide.
Nose
Dark and intense amber with orange highlights, dense and bright in the glass — the visual signature of nearly a quarter century of tropical Venezuelan barrel aging across two separate casks. Caramel and amyl alcohol open the nose, joined by fennel, candied and macerated fruits, and almonds. Cinnamon and tonka bean add warm baking spice, alongside coconut and cacao nibs. Cigar box adds a savory, tobacco-adjacent depth, with roasted coffee and gentle smokiness closing out an aromatic profile of genuine complexity.
Palate
Strength, elegance, and personality define the palate, with a perfect balance evident from the very first sip. Toffee, dates, and prunes carry rich, dark dried-fruit sweetness, joined by almonds. The elevated wood character fills the mouth in what the distillery describes as a magical equilibrium — present and structural without ever dominating the fruit and spice beneath it.
Finish
Long and warming, with the concentrated dried fruit, toffee, and cigar box character lingering well after the sip. The absence of angel's share replacement is most directly apparent here — a density and intensity that only genuinely extended, unreplenished tropical aging can produce.
