Ron Cihuatan 8 Years Old Gran Reserva Rum is a refined and warm expression of Salvadoran rum. Its eight years of solera-style maturation lend it a balance of oak texture, rich caramel sweetness, and subtle tropical brightness. The result is a versatile yet elegant spirit — excellent neat, on the rocks, or in more elevated rum cocktails.
Produced by Licorera Cihuatan in El Salvador, this rum is deeply rooted in local sugarcane heritage. Cihuatan manages the process from cane to bottle, aiming for quality and consistency in each release.
The “8 Years” in its name refers to a solera-style aging system using ex-bourbon American oak barrels. The solera method means the rum is a blend of multiple aged lots, with the youngest component at eight years, giving complexity from blended age integration rather than strict single-barrel aging.
Bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof), it is neither over-oaked nor overly sweet — the focus is on balance and drinkability rather than sheer power.
Nose:
Warm caramel and vanilla dominate initially, followed by hints of toasted oak, almond, and citrus zest (notably orange peel). With air, soft notes of banana or coconut may emerge, adding tropical nuance.
Palate:
Soft and approachable in texture. Caramel and cane sugar lead, layered with baking spice (especially cinnamon), nutty tones (almond, hazelnut), and a gentle touch of citrus peel. Mid-palate may reveal subtle oak tannin and a touch of coconut or dried fruit.
Finish:
Moderately long and gently drying. The oak influence lingers in the form of spice, and the caramel sweetness recedes to leave behind hints of citrus and toasted nuts.
