Linkwood is one of Speyside’s quiet greats. The distillery near Elgin, owned by Diageo, produces an elegant, fruity, floral spirit that has long been prized by blenders, and as independent bottlers point out, “you can only find their single malt through independent bottlers” because the owner rarely releases it as a single malt. Among whisky enthusiasts, it has a devoted following, and a well-aged Linkwood in a quiet cask is how many people prefer to taste it.
That’s what this is. Scotch Drinkers Only selected and bottled this single cask exclusively for its Private Cask Selection: 15 years in a single refill ex-bourbon barrel (cask
#308130), and bottled at natural cask strength, 53.6% ABV (107.2 proof), with natural color and no chill filtration. A refill barrel has already been used, so it gives up less flavor, which, in the distributor’s words, “keeps the cask influence restrained, allowing elegant orchard fruit, floral character and creamy malt to lead.” Only 248 bottles were produced.
The flyer’s profile reads like a spring orchard. The nose offers “ripe pear, green apple, white peach, wildflower honey, vanilla cream, fresh-cut grass, lemon blossom and soft oak.” The palate is “silky orchard fruit, vanilla custard, buttery shortbread, malted barley, toasted almond, citrus zest and floral honey.” The finish is “long and softly warming, with sweet malt, vanilla, citrus peel, delicate oak and lingering floral sweetness.” The distributor’s overall summary is “a whisky of remarkable balance and sophistication.”
