PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Se Busca means “wanted,” as on a wanted poster, and the mezcal is a tribute to the women who fought and broke cultural barriers during the Mexican Revolution of 1910 to 1920. The brand also puts women at the center of its production, with a team that includes Eleana Nuñez, who oversees production and export, Doña Mary and Doña Yuri, who take part in the fermentation, Azucena, who leads bottling, and Diana, the lead chemist who handles the liquid profile.
The mezcal is made at the family-run López Sosa distillery in San Juan del Río, Oaxaca, by maestros mezcaleros Rodolfo and Mary López Sosa, from hand-harvested 100% Espadín agave and ultra-pure water from a local mountain spring near the distillery. It’s produced in small batches by artisanal methods that the family has overseen for generations. The Añejo is then aged in French oak ex-sherry casks, for at least 12 months, the legal minimum for the category, with some listings citing two years. That aging gives it a tawny-brown color, and it’s bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof).
The resulting mezcal balances the rich, cooked-agave and mesquite character of Oaxacan mezcal with the sweeter, rounder notes of oak. The brand’s tasting notes describe a nose of “vanilla, coconut, oak, dates, raisins, and mesquite,” a palate of “coconut, cooked agave, dried fruit, sweet almonds, and hazelnuts,” and a finish that is “full-bodied, sweet, vigorous, and round with a long-textured finish.” Other descriptions note “an aroma of green vegetables and spicy cooked agave,” with “a palate of sweet oak, dates and raisins.”
It’s a good “first aged mezcal,” softer and sweeter than a joven, with the smoke present but mellowed, and a natural for customers who like añejo tequila, bourbon, or Cognac. Sip it neat in a copita, or stir it into an Oaxacan Old Fashioned, where the oak and dried-fruit character shine.
Se Busca Mezcal Añejo is produced at the López Sosa family distillery in San Juan del Río, Oaxaca, Mexico, by maestros mezcaleros Rodolfo and Mary López Sosa, from hand-harvested 100% Espadín agave (Agave angustifolia) and mountain spring water, in small batches. It is aged in French oak ex-sherry casks, at least 12 months. The brand is owned by the Stoli Group. Bottled at 40% ABV / 80 proof, 750ml.
