PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The name says everything about the intention. KARIA — pronounced KAR-ee-ah — comes from the Greek word for "graceful," and in the winery's own framing, every decision made in the production of this wine is oriented toward that single quality. Not weight. Not richness. Not the oaky, buttery, full-throttle Chardonnay style that defined California Chardonnay's most commercially successful decades. Graceful — which in Napa Valley Chardonnay terms means cool-climate vineyard sourcing, partial malolactic fermentation, balanced oak integration, and the specific restraint that prevents a wine of genuine quality from becoming a wine of mere power.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is one of Napa Valley's most historically significant estates. The winery that Warren Winiarski founded in 1970 produced the Cabernet Sauvignon that beat Bordeaux's finest in the 1976 Judgment of Paris — the single most consequential competitive tasting in the history of California wine, which established Napa Valley's credibility as a world-class wine region on the international stage. Today the estate is owned jointly by Antinori and Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, the same partnership that owns Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' most celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon program. The KARIA Chardonnay represents the winery's Napa Valley Collection — the series of regionally representative, quality-focused wines designed to offer a welcoming introduction to the full range of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' distinctive style.

For 2024, KARIA is built from four distinct cool-climate Napa Valley sources: Atlas Peak District's Antica Estate contributing 52% — a high-elevation site whose lemon, lime, and citrus intensity gives the wine its most structurally racy and the most specifically mineral-driven primary quality; Carneros at 24%, where morning and evening breezes from San Pablo Bay contribute citrus and mineral notes; Arcadia Vineyard in the Coombsville District at 18%, whose cooler temperatures add freshness; and Oak Knoll at 6%. Vinous awarded 93 Points: "heady and racy from start to finish — lemon confit, tangerine oil, marzipan and white flowers — a striking mix of vintage 2024 richness tempered by partially blocked malolactic fermentation." Wine Enthusiast's Elaine Chukan Brown found fresh lime, lemon zest, ripe quince, and apple blossom creating "a generous Chardonnay with a complex array of flavors, firm acidity, and an opulent mouthfeel." The wine that tells you exactly what it is: Napa Valley Chardonnay — graceful.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was founded in 1970 by Warren Winiarski in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, a sub-appellation defined by its rocky, volcanic palisades and the warm days and cool afternoons produced by afternoon winds drawn up from San Pablo Bay. The winery gained international fame with its 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon's triumph at the 1976 Judgment of Paris — a blind tasting conducted by Paris-based wine experts that placed a California wine above the finest Bordeaux châteaux. Today the estate is jointly owned by Antinori and Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, with the KARIA Chardonnay part of its Napa Valley Collection.

The 2024 KARIA Chardonnay draws from four cool-climate Napa Valley sources specifically selected to contribute distinct character:

Atlas Peak (Antica Estate, 52%) — a high-elevation, volcanic-soil district in the eastern Vaca Range, well above the valley floor, whose altitude and cooler temperatures produce fruit with lemon and lime citrus notes alongside a richer mouthfeel. The Antica Estate, an Antinori family holding, is one of the most carefully farmed sites contributing to the KARIA blend.

Carneros (24%) — a coastal district straddling the boundary between Napa and Sonoma counties, where morning and evening breezes from San Pablo Bay create the coolest growing conditions in the Napa appellation, contributing citrus brightness and mineral notes to the blend.

Coombsville District, Arcadia Vineyard (18%) — a cool eastern Napa district whose protected valley position and volcanic soils add freshness and structure.

Oak Knoll District (6%) — a warmer valley-floor district contributing body and fruit richness.

The 2024 growing season featured 27.75 inches of rainfall, a cool spring, and warmer temperatures building through May and June, with a heat spike just before veraison that helped manage vine vigor and accelerated flavor development — resulting in harvest occurring three weeks earlier than 2023. The winemaking employs partially blocked malolactic fermentation — a technique specifically chosen to balance the vintage's natural richness by preserving some of the wine's natural malic acidity, preventing the full transformation to lactic acid that produces a buttery, less structured profile. The result is a wine with genuine tension alongside its generosity.

Critics Reviews

Vinous — 93 Points:
"The 2024 Chardonnay Karia is heady and racy from start to finish. Lemon confit, tangerine oil, marzipan and white flowers are beautifully laced together. The Karia offers a striking mix of vintage 2024 richness tempered by partially blocked malolactic fermentation."

Wine Enthusiast 92 Points (Elaine Chukan Brown):
"Fresh lime, lemon zest, ripe quince, and an apple blossom, spice lift create a generous Chardonnay with a complex array of flavors, firm acidity, and an opulent mouthfeel. Oak spices and a touch of creaminess are well integrated through a persistent finish."

James Suckling:
"Aromas of preserved lemons, salted nuts, sea spray, baking spices and orchard fruit. The midweight palate has a phenolic, slightly cloying mouthfeel, balanced with taut acidity. Drink now."

Wine-Searcher aggregate — 92/100 (2024 vintage)

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars official tasting notes:
"Aromas of white peach, zesty lemon-lime, luxurious crème brûlée, and refreshing honeydew melon, complemented by delicate floral notes and a whisper of clove and vanilla. The palate is treated to a velvety mouthfeel and medium body that exudes balance and sophistication. Vibrant citrus and luscious honeysuckle dance on the palate, leading to an enchanting finish with a hint of oak."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Pale gold with a luminous clarity. Lemon confit and tangerine oil open the nose with vivid, concentrated citrus expressiveness — the Atlas Peak Antica Estate's most directly and the most specifically mineral-citrus-driven contribution at its most precise. White peach and honeydew melon add soft, welcoming stone and melon fruit. Luxurious crème brûlée adds a warm, toasty secondary richness from the partial oak program. Marzipan and white flowers — the most specifically Vinous-identified aromatic pairing — add the most elegantly complex and the most memorably wine-culture-adjacent tertiary aromatics. Delicate floral notes, apple blossom, and a whisper of clove and vanilla round out a nose of considerable aromatic sophistication.

Palate
Heady and racy — the most accurately observed and the most specifically Vinous characterization of the 2024's defining palate quality. Vibrant citrus and firm acidity carry the structural framework, the partially blocked malolactic fermentation most directly apparent in the wine's tension and freshness. Luscious honeysuckle adds generosity. A velvety mouthfeel and medium body balance the citrus brightness — opulent without heaviness, graceful as the name promises. Oak spices and a touch of creaminess integrate seamlessly. Preserved lemons, salted nuts, and sea spray carry the most specifically minerally and the most specifically cool-climate Napa expression through the back half.

Finish
Persistent and oak-laced — the hint of oak carrying the close with the most elegantly integrated and the most specifically well-judged structural contribution. The citrus and floral character linger alongside the creaminess and subtle baking spice. Firm acidity keeps the finish genuinely refreshing.
