Blue Peak takes its name from a genuine, real place — a 13,000-foot peak in Aspen, Colorado, and a fitting namesake for a whiskey distilled at genuinely high altitude in Denver. Stranahan's was one of the very first distilleries to champion American single malt as its own serious category, and Blue Peak, a permanent addition to the lineup since October 2020, represents a real evolution in that effort: made from 100% malted barley, double-distilled, and first aged four years in new, charred American oak (char #3), before moving into oak foeders for a genuine Solera finish — the same layered, never-fully-emptied blending method traditionally used in Spanish Sherry and Madeira production, where younger whiskey continuously marries with older stock already resting in the foeder.
The results have earned genuinely strong, independent recognition: 95 Points from the Beverage Tasting Institute, which called it "a benchmark example of American Single Malt with sherry cask aging," and 93 Points from the Ultimate Beverage Challenge, describing a "grainy aroma" balanced "by fresh red apple sweetness and undertones of wheat toast," with the toastiness "played up on the palate, with supporting notes of buttery vanilla, baking spices, and peach skin."
Bourbon Banter's detailed tasting found the nose opening with "a blast of cherry saltwater taffy and cotton candy, ground nutmeg and an elusive dash of star anise," alongside "dried cranberry steeped in herbal tea" and "the aroma of cream soda," the taste bringing "nutmeg and a touch of black pepper" at mid-palate before concluding "with grain-forward malt, cotton candy, and semi-sweet cherry taffy notes," calling the whiskey genuinely "clean" with "none of the flavors coming across as muddled," and the finish "surprisingly long lasting for such a low proof expression." The Whiskey Jug's review found "dried orchard fruit, malt, banana chips, vanilla cream, cocoa, cream soda and some taffy sweetness" on the nose, awarding it a strong 3.75 rating and calling it "sippable, mixable, versatile" — "a fun tasty American Single Malt." Breaking Bourbon's tasting noted the whiskey genuinely "punches above the proof it's bottled at," concluding it's "an affordable choice" for anyone curious "what American single malts taste like compared to a standard bourbon or rye." This is genuinely well-reviewed, approachable Colorado single malt — real Solera craft behind a whiskey built to welcome newcomers into the category.
Stranahan's Blue Peak Single Malt Whiskey is produced by Stranahan's Distillery in Denver, Colorado, made entirely from 100% malted barley, double-distilled at high altitude. The whiskey first ages four years in 53-gallon new, charred American oak barrels (char #3) in Stranahan's Denver warehouses, then moves into oak foeders for a Solera finish — a continuous blending method in which younger whiskey marries with older stock already resting in the never-fully-emptied foeder.
A permanent addition to the Stranahan's portfolio since October 2020. Bottled non-chill filtered, in natural colour, at 43% ABV / 86 proof, 750ml.
Beverage Tasting Institute — 95 Points:
"Honeyed barley, sweet baking spices, and layers of red and orchard fruits; a benchmark example of American Single Malt with sherry cask aging."
Ultimate Beverage Challenge — 93 Points:
"A grainy aroma is balanced by fresh red apple sweetness and undertones of wheat toast. The toastiness is played up on the palate, with supporting notes of buttery vanilla, baking spices, and peach skin. The spice kissed flavors linger on the supple finish."
Bourbon Banter (extended independent review):
"The nose opens with a blast of cherry saltwater taffy and cotton candy, ground nutmeg and an elusive dash of star anise that comes and goes. Dried cranberry steeped in herbal tea, the faintest bit of mint leaf, and even the aroma of cream soda all make their way out of the glass. Soon after, the taste of nutmeg and a touch of black pepper pops at mid palate and travels to the roof of the mouth before concluding with grain-forward malt, cotton candy, and semi-sweet cherry taffy notes. This whiskey tastes 'clean' with none of the flavors coming across as muddled and the finish is surprisingly long lasting for such a low proof expression."
The Whiskey Jug — 3.75/5:
"Nose: Dried orchard fruit, malt, banana chips, vanilla cream, cocoa, cream soda and some taffy sweetness. Palate: Dried orchard fruit, cocoa, banana chips, oak, malt, vanilla cream, cream soda and some spice and nuts. Sippable, mixable, versatile, this is a fun tasty American Single Malt."
Stranahan's (official distiller's notes):
"Nose: Dried apricot, nutmeg, cinnamon toast, hints of leather and light tobacco. Palate: Creamy butterscotch and brown sugar, baked apples, with notes of cayenne and toasted oak. Finish: Rich and mellow, earthy malt gently fades into lingering spices."
Nose
Dried apricot and nutmeg lead, joined by cinnamon toast, leather, and light tobacco, alongside cherry saltwater taffy, cotton candy, and star anise.
Palate
Creamy butterscotch and brown sugar carry the entry, developing baked apple, cayenne, toasted oak, buttery vanilla, and peach skin, with a grain-forward malt character throughout.
Finish
Rich and mellow, closing with earthy malt fading into lingering baking spice — genuinely long for its proof.
