PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Tapatío was the original flagship of La Alteña Distillery, launched years before the same family introduced El Tesoro de Don Felipe or, decades later, Carlos Camarena's own celebrated Tequila Ocho. The Camarena family has been farming agave for six generations and distilling tequila for four, and Tapatío remains, by many accounts, the brand purists point to first — a cult favorite in Mexico for more than 75 years before it ever reached American shelves, brought over only through what one retailer describes as "the friendship and trust of two distilling families."
The reposado begins with 100% Blue Weber agave grown in the Los Altos highlands, brick-oven roasted, extracted through a combination of traditional tahona stone-wheel milling and roller mill, then fermented with the agave fibers still in the mix, in open-top wooden vats using a proprietary yeast culture the Camarena family has maintained for generations. Double distillation happens in copper pot stills, and the finished spirit rests in ex-bourbon barrels for a period that runs, depending on the specific batch, somewhere between four and eight months — notably longer than the legal minimum for the category, giving the naturally bright, high-altitude agave character time to round out without ever losing its essential identity. Farming stays entirely sustainable, with no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and the finished tequila is certified additive-free by Tequila Matchmaker.
Most tasting accounts converge on a genuinely classic reposado profile: buttery cooked agave meeting caramel, vanilla, toasty oak, and gentle baking spice, with black pepper and cinnamon adding real warmth through the finish. Difford's Guide's independent review found something considerably more distinctive and savory in an earlier sample: "a nose with hints of green olive brine with spicy green bell pepper, dried grass aromas," a "deliciously spicy palate with chargrilled vegetables, particularly peppers sprinkled with sea salt, samphire and garnished with very subtle clarified cherry tomato juice," with vanilla and caramel notes only emerging toward a finish that "turns peppery." One devoted Agave Matchmaker reviewer summed the whole thing up well: "extremely well balanced, a tribute to Carlos Camarena, because the agave shines through... could sip it all night" — and specifically praised the 1-liter format with its screw cap as a genuine plus for value and easy handling. This is honest, unpretentious highland reposado from one of Jalisco's most respected distilling families, made the way it's always been made.
Tapatío Reposado is produced at La Alteña Distillery (NOM 1139) in Arandas, in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco, founded in 1937 by Don Felipe Camarena Hernández. The Camarena family has farmed agave for six generations and distilled tequila for four, with Don Felipe's grandson Carlos Camarena now serving as master distiller — the same Carlos Camarena who founded Tequila Ocho and Los Alambiques Distillery. Tapatío was La Alteña's original flagship brand, predating the family's later launch of El Tesoro de Don Felipe.
The tequila is made entirely from 100% Blue Weber agave grown in the Los Altos highlands, harvested at full maturity, roasted in traditional brick ovens, then extracted using a combination of tahona stone-wheel milling and roller mill. The mash ferments with agave fibers included, in open-top wooden fermentation tanks, using a proprietary yeast culture maintained across generations, before double distillation in copper pot stills. The finished spirit ages in ex-bourbon barrels for a period ranging from four to eight months depending on the batch, longer than the legal minimum required for reposado classification. Farming practices are entirely sustainable, free of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and the tequila is certified additive-free by Tequila Matchmaker. This particular offering is bottled at 1000ml (1 Liter) with a screw cap closure.
Difford's Guide (extended independent review, tasted before May 1, 2011):
"Appearance: Clear, pale gold. Aroma: A nose with hints of green olive brine with spicy green bell pepper, dried grass aromas. Taste: Deliciously spicy palate with chargrilled vegetables, particularly peppers sprinkled with sea salt, samphire and garnished with very subtle clarified cherry tomato juice. Aftertaste: Vanilla and caramel notes emerge towards the finish which turns peppery."
Agave Matchmaker community (extended review):
"This is a must have reposado. Extremely well balanced, (a tribute to Carlos Camarena, because the agave shines through). Certainly a top reposado for me. Added plus — great price point, 1 ltr bottle and a screw cap for easy travel. Could sip it all night."
Agave Matchmaker community (additional reviews):
"No hidden agenda here, tastes like the Blanco with a touch of added sweetness and spice from the oak. Still loads of agave to be had, especially on the finish." A separate reviewer found: "This tequila just makes me smile. It's fun. Distilled at La Altena, it's not as refined as Ocho or as aggressive as El Tesoro."
Tequila Report (2026):
"Old-school reposado from NOM 1139 that still delivers... it is lightly aged 4-8 months in ex-bourbon barrels, allowing the agave to remain the star of the show."
Sip Tequila (official tasting note):
"Nose: Buttery cooked agave with sweet ripe fruit, caramel, and subtle hints of oak and smoke. Palate: Rich, dominant cooked agave flavor with light pepper, faint notes of bourbon, caramel, coffee, and cocoa. Finish: Soft and lasting with a gentle touch of spice."
Nose
Clear, pale gold in color. Buttery cooked agave leads, joined by sweet ripe fruit, caramel, and subtle hints of oak and smoke. Some independent tastings find a more savory character instead — green olive brine, spicy green bell pepper, and dried grass.
Palate
Rich, dominant cooked agave carries the entry, with light pepper, faint bourbon, caramel, coffee, and cocoa building through the mid-palate. Vanilla, toasty oak, and cinnamon add warmth. Some tastings find a genuinely spicier, more savory register — chargrilled vegetables, sea salt, and green pepper.
Finish
Soft and lasting, with a gentle touch of spice. Vanilla and caramel notes often emerge specifically toward the close, with the finish turning noticeably peppery in some tastings — a genuinely agave-forward close that keeps the spirit's essential character front and center.
