PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

TATE is about as boutique as Napa Valley wine gets — founded in 2011 by husband-and-wife team David and Suzanne Tate, the entire operation produces just over 1,000 cases annually across its complete portfolio: a single Chardonnay from Yountville, a single Merlot from Calistoga, and a handful of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from St. Helena, Mt. Veeder, and Howell Mountain. That's the whole lineup, every wine sourced from independently owned micro-vineyards the Tates have personally sought out across the valley — genuinely small-batch, hands-on winemaking rather than a brand stretched thin across dozens of labels.

Jack's Vineyard sits at higher elevation on Howell Mountain, one of Napa's most celebrated and demanding mountain AVAs — steep, rugged terrain that forces vines to work hard for every bit of water and nutrition they get, concentrating flavor and building the distinctive tannin structure the appellation is known for. This is a genuinely single-vineyard wine, not a blend pulled from multiple sources, giving it a real, focused expression of this one specific site.

The winemaker's own tasting notes describe the 2021 vintage as "a beautiful deep purple," "intensely fragrant with black raspberry, anise and fresh truffles," with "acai berries, plums and light roast coffee" also apparent. The wine offers "a wonderful mouthfeel, moving to the cocoa dust tannins that Howell Mountain is known for, followed by fresh vanilla bean, slight eucalyptus and dark berry fruit." Notably, "the tannins are softer than in previous years, but definitely present in a light chalky way with great mountain acidity" — a wine showing real approachability in its youth while still carrying Howell Mountain's characteristic structure. We don't have independently published critic reviews for this specific vintage, genuinely typical for a wine made in such small quantities from such a small producer, where much of the allocation moves through mailing lists and small retail partners rather than wide critic sampling. This is genuinely small-production, single-vineyard mountain Cabernet — real character from one of Napa's most demanding growing sites, made by hand, in quantities too small to chase critic attention.

Origins & Craftsmanship

TATE Wines was founded in 2011 by husband-and-wife team David and Suzanne Tate, producing just over 1,000 cases annually across their entire portfolio — a genuinely small, hands-on operation built around single-expression wines sourced from independently owned, micro-vineyards across Napa Valley's valley floor and mountainsides.

This 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced entirely from Jack's Vineyard, a single, high-elevation site within the Howell Mountain AVA — one of Napa's most rugged and demanding mountain growing areas, known for producing wines with real structural intensity and distinctive mineral character.

Critics Reviews

No independently published critic reviews are confirmed for this specific 2021 vintage at this time — consistent with a wine made in genuinely small quantities from a boutique, low-volume producer.
