TATE is about as boutique as Napa Valley wine gets — founded in 2011 by husband-and-wife team David and Suzanne Tate, the entire operation produces just over 1,000 cases annually across its complete portfolio: a single Chardonnay from Yountville, a single Merlot from Calistoga, and a handful of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from St. Helena, Mt. Veeder, and Howell Mountain. That's the whole lineup, every wine sourced from independently owned micro-vineyards the Tates have personally sought out — genuinely small-batch, hands-on winemaking rather than a brand stretched thin across dozens of labels.
Jack's Vineyard is a genuinely tiny site — just a single acre of Cabernet Sauvignon perched atop Howell Mountain, managed by Greg Bietz, whose attention to detail is, per the winery's own account, "unparalleled" — as Suzanne Tate herself describes it, "the most over farmed one acre vineyard in Napa," with "no leaf out of place or imperfect berry in the vineyard." The vineyard's owner, a self-taught viticulturist, named the site after his bull terrier, Jack, who is apparently just as vigilant about protecting the vines from predators. That single acre of high-elevation Howell Mountain terrain produces genuinely concentrated, structured fruit, reflecting the appellation's characteristic depth.

This 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced entirely from Jack's Vineyard, a single acre of high-elevation Cabernet Sauvignon on Howell Mountain, managed by a self-taught viticulturist and farmer Greg Bietz, named for the vineyard owner's bull terrier, Jack.
Nose
Ripe blackberry and black cherry lead, joined by cassis and plum, alongside cedar, toasted oak, vanilla, and baking spice.
Palate
Full-bodied and well-structured, with dark fruit carrying real generosity, developing ripe plum and toasted oak, framed by polished tannin.
