Joshua is where Teusner began. Kym Teusner and Mick Page started the company after a chat over a pint in 2001, when they overheard two growers talking about pulling out their 85-year-old Grenache vines. They offered the growers four times what they would have been paid for the crop, and that stance of treating growers with respect remains the cornerstone of the business. The first wine, in 2002, was a Grenache blend, named Joshua after Mick Page’s first son.
Joshua is a classic Barossa GSM made in an unusual way. It’s typically about two-thirds old-vine Grenache, a chunk of Mataro (Mourvèdre), and a splash of Shiraz, from a network of Barossa Valley vineyards with vines up to 100 years old, many of them dry-grown bush vines. And it’s made with no oak at all: matured in stainless steel and bottled within about six months of vintage, “to showcase the kind of juicy, spicy, flavorsome wines you can do so well in the Barossa by blending heritage varieties from old vines.” As Kym says, “even after 12 years it retains a core of vibrant fruit,” adding “mushroom, truffle and forest floor.” The 2022 was a cool vintage with no heat spikes, bottled at about 14.5% ABV, under screw cap.
Dave Brookes of the Halliday Wine Companion scored the 2022 94 Points and gave it a Special Value rating: “A blend of grenache, mataro and shiraz unencumbered by artifact with pure, spicy plummy fruits, ginger spice, citrus blossom, savoury, bright and spacious with a blast of sour morello cherry on the finish. It’s still hitting the spot.” Wine Selectors’ notes describe “medium to deep garnet. Blueberry, dark cherry, liquorice and crushed leaf aromas. Medium-weight yet with good concentration of blue and red fruit, tight acidity, savoury notes of anise and Italian bitters, firm tannins and a crunchy finish.” A drinker’s note on the label describes “an excellent example of a Barossa GSM. A trace of bacon on nose and palate, very savoury,” with “raspberry plus charcuterie, earth and tar” and “mellow resolved tannins with chocolate nuances.”
It’s “not your typical Barossa red,” but “a fantastic take on the GSM style and an excellent food wine,” best with charcuterie, roast chicken, lamb, burgers, and pizza, and drinking best now through 2026. A good “lunch wine,” in Teusner’s own words: “to knock back over lunch with a plate of the good gear from the local butcher in Nuriootpa.”
Teusner 2022 Joshua Grenache Mataro Shiraz is produced by Teusner in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, from old-vine Grenache, Mataro, and Shiraz from vineyards across the valley with vines up to 100 years old (the blend is typically about two-thirds Grenache). It is matured in stainless steel with no oak and bottled young. About 14.5% ABV, under screw cap, 750ml.

Wine Selectors (tasting notes):
“Made with no oak and released young, the Joshua is not your typical Barossa red but it is a fantastic take on the GSM style and an excellent food wine. Medium to deep garnet. Blueberry, dark cherry, liquorice and crushed leaf aromas. Medium-weight yet with good concentration of blue and red fruit, tight acidity, savoury notes of anise and Italian bitters, firm tannins and a crunchy finish.”
Teusner (winery description):
“Typically a blend of about 2/3rds old vine Grenache, a chunk of Mataro and a splash of Shiraz, we keep our Josh’ away from oak and release it young to showcase the kind of juicy, spicy, flavorsome wines you can do so well in the Barossa by blending heritage varieties from old vines.”
Drinker’s note (Delectable):
“An excellent example of a Barossa GSM. A trace of bacon on nose and palate, very savoury. The taste descriptors for Grenache and Mataro certainly on show with notes of raspberry plus charcuterie, earth and tar. Mellow resolved tannins with chocolate nuances make this a delicious wine.”
