PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Botanist Islay Dry Gin has been a genuine industry favorite since it first launched in 2010, distilled at Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay from 22 hand-foraged local botanicals — mugwort leaves, heather flowers, lady's bedstraw, creeping thistle, wild mint, and more — alongside classic gin botanicals like juniper and coriander. What's less widely known is that Head Distiller Adam Hannett has spent years quietly experimenting with resting that exact gin in casks, working with access to more than 200 distinct cask types across Bruichladdich's own warehouses. In February 2024, that long experimentation finally became an official release: The Botanist Islay Cask Matured Gin Range, launched as two related bottlings — this Cask Rested expression, matured a minimum of six months, and a considerably longer Cask Aged sibling, matured a full three years.
For Cask Rested, Hannett selected 15 to 16 different types of American and European oak casks, sourced from a variety of regions, specifically for this shorter resting period. As Marketview Liquor's own copy frames the ambition: "cask matured gin is not a new concept... however, the category is confused and cluttered, with no defined markers of quality. Until now." The result pours a genuinely distinctive blush or autumn-gold hue, visibly colored by its time in wood — a real departure from the clear spirit gin drinkers typically expect.
Imbibe Magazine featured the gin as their "Drink of the Week," finding it "light amber in color," presenting "bright and botanically forward, with the barrel contributing some complementary complexity with notes of vanilla and a subtle richness." The Gin Is In's independent review found the aroma "mostly herbal, with only the subtlest barrel character" — "herbaceous juniper, some hints of woodruff and coumarin aroma, and bitter orange rind," with "spicy cinnamon" lending "some pepperiness as it warms." On the palate, though, "this is where the barrel's flavor impact comes through strongly," delivering "woodruff, vanilla cream, and orange zest early," before "cinnamon and cassia spice burst from the back." The official tasting notes describe warming spices and candied citrus peel opening the nose, with a "sweet, enticing bouquet of perfumed juniper, baking spices and oak," where "the delicate floral, herbaceous notes of The Botanist combine with the subtle hint of dried fruits from its contact with wood." On the palate: soft and silky, with "captivating oak" and "expert distillation" combining with "the influence of wood and time" to create what the distillery calls "a magical experience," closing as "the oak influence begins to fade" and "the heart of The Botanist reveals itself in a rush of fresh herbal notes, juniper, coriander and citrus." This is a genuinely thoughtful, experimental take on gin — bridging the category with whisky-making tradition in a way few other producers attempt.
The Botanist Cask Rested Gin is produced at Bruichladdich Distillery on the Isle of Islay, Scotland, owned by Rémy Cointreau. It builds on The Botanist Islay Dry Gin, first distilled in 2010 using 22 hand-foraged local botanicals — including mugwort, heather, lady's bedstraw, creeping thistle, apple mint, water mint, spearmint, wood sage, and tansy — alongside classic gin botanicals such as juniper and coriander seed.
Head Distiller Adam Hannett, drawing on access to more than 200 distinct cask types across the distillery's warehouses, selected 15 to 16 different American and European oak casks, sourced from a variety of regions, specifically to rest this expression for a minimum of six months. The result was officially launched in February 2024 as part of The Botanist Islay Cask Matured Gin Range, alongside a longer-matured Cask Aged sibling (minimum 3 years). Bottled at 46% ABV / 92 proof.

Imbibe Magazine — "Drink of the Week":
"Light amber in color, the gin still presents bright and botanically forward, with the barrel contributing some complementary complexity with notes of vanilla and a subtle richness."
The Gin Is In (extended independent review):
"An excellent London Dry Gin, it features a wide range of botanicals yet still celebrates a classic, juniper backbone. Aroma: Mostly herbal, with only the subtlest barrel character. Botanist Islay Cask Rested Gin is about the botanicals. Herbaceous juniper, some hints of woodruff and coumarin aroma, and bitter orange rind. Spicy cinnamon lends it some pepperiness as it warms. Flavor: This is where the barrel's flavor impact comes through strongly. Woodruff, vanilla cream, and orange zest early. Cinnamon and cassia spice burst from the back."
The Botanist / official tasting notes:
"Nose: This blush liquid delivers initial notes of warming spices and candied citrus peels, a sweet, enticing bouquet of perfumed juniper, baking spices and oak. The delicate floral, herbaceous notes of The Botanist combine with the subtle hint of dried fruits from its contact with wood. Character: The gentle elegance of the cask rested Botanist holds a complexity and balance that is a joy to taste — the cask influence shapes the spirit, bringing extra viscosity to the palate. Finish: The oak influence begins to fade as the heart of The Botanist reveals itself in a rush of fresh herbal notes, juniper, coriander and citrus."
Nose
Blush to autumn-gold in color. Warming spices and candied citrus peel open, joined by a sweet bouquet of perfumed juniper, baking spices, and oak. Woodruff, coumarin, bitter orange rind, and spicy cinnamon add further complexity, alongside candied fruits, orange, coconut, and almonds.
Palate
Soft and silky, with genuine cask-driven viscosity. Vanilla cream and orange zest lead early, joined by delicate woody spices, oily juniper, and fresh floral herbs. Cinnamon and cassia spice build toward the back of the palate.
Finish
The oak influence gradually fades, revealing the classic Botanist heart — a rush of fresh herbal notes, juniper, coriander, and citrus closing the experience.
