In 2026, The GlenDronach turns 200. Founded in 1826 by James Allardice in the valley of Forgue, deep in the East Highland hills, it is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. To celebrate, the distillery has released The Anniversary Edition, a limited-release series, and its first expression is the Boynsmill House Edition, a fourteen-year-old that, in the distillery’s words, “invites you back to the time of our distillery’s foundation in 1826.”
The whisky is matured in The GlenDronach’s signature duality of the finest Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, the style for which the distillery is renowned. In addition, Master Blender Rachel Barrie has selected a small number of casks that previously held Claret red wine, to complement the robust character of the malt. The Claret casks are a homage to the wines that would have adorned the tables at the many parties Allardice was known to enjoy, and the style, the distillery says, “perfectly complements the rich and robust character of The GlenDronach, adding fruit-filled layers.” The distillery matures its Highland single malt in the finest Spanish sherry casks from Andalucía, and it is bottled at 46.8% ABV with only natural, cask-imparted colour. It is a “rich copper” in the glass.
The distillery’s tasting notes describe a nose that is “greeted by a delightful fruit and nut medley, as the sweetness of Highland toffee intertwines with the succulence of bramble and stone fruit, enriched with hazelnut and raisin.” The palate is “charmed by a plush, ripe malt character with a richness of dried fruits and nuts,” “rising to a crescendo of velvety smooth and mellow chocolate caramel notes.” Master Blender Rachel Barrie says the edition “invites you to celebrate 200 years of The GlenDronach in an opulent expression, reminiscent of lavish times past and present.” The bottle comes in an illustrated gift box showing the Boynsmill House and the dates 1826 and 2026. It’s a limited release, and an obvious pick for GlenDronach fans, sherry-cask collectors, and anyone marking a milestone.
