PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Grail is genuinely the most ambitious release The Prisoner Wine Company has ever produced — a deliberate step beyond the brand's more famous, eclectic blends, built entirely around three standout blocks in Wappo Hill Vineyard, chosen specifically for how precisely they express Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. As Director of Winemaking Todd Ricard put it in a recent interview: "GRAIL has a powerful, concentrated style with big fruit and mouthfeel, not overwhelmed by oak... this is a deliberate choice. We monitor our extractions during fermentation very closely through daily sensory evaluations with our winemaking team to ensure we achieve a precise balance of structure and body, delivering a wine that is powerful yet still approachable today." Ricard added that Stags Leap's own terroir plays a direct role in that balance: "Stags Leap can be powerful and dark, and the complexity of these blocks incorporates some earthy and mineral notes to the ripe black and blue fruit signature of the district. We feel these site-specific components must be displayed to present wines of this caliber."

The 2023 vintage tested real patience in the vineyard — heavy winter rains and a slow start gave way to a long, lingering summer that stretched harvest into October, ultimately building layered flavor, deep color, and genuine balance. The wine ages 18 months in 60% new French oak, with Ricard's own philosophy guiding the wood treatment directly: "oak is a delicate balance each year, ensuring it is integrated into the wine rather than a distinct layer. It should elevate fruit, spice, and mouthfeel without coming across as 'oaky.'"

The Prisoner Wine Company's own tasting notes describe "purple fruit, dark cherry, blueberry, blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate, warm dark spice, mocha," with "hints of dried herbs and sweet pipe tobacco" — genuinely rich, layered character reflecting both the fruit's concentration and the wine's careful oak integration. Ricard himself expressed real hope for how the wine will develop: "five or ten years from now, when someone opens a bottle of GRAIL, I hope they see that the wine has gained even greater taste and complexity with age, while still showcasing the character of the 2023 vintage," calling it "a pivotal chapter in The Prisoner's evolution." This is genuinely serious, deliberately crafted wine — a real departure from The Prisoner's more playful reputation, aimed squarely at showcasing what Stags Leap District's terroir can achieve at the highest level.

Origins & Craftsmanship

The Prisoner Wine Company 2023 Grail Red Wine is a blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced entirely from three standout blocks within Wappo Hill Vineyard, in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, California. The wine is crafted under Director of Winemaking Todd Ricard, with the estate monitoring extractions closely through daily sensory evaluations to achieve a deliberate balance of structure and body.

The 2023 growing season was shaped by heavy winter rains and a slow start, followed by a long, lingering summer that stretched harvest into October, building deep color and layered flavor concentration. The wine ages 18 months in French oak, 60% of it new — a carefully managed oak regime intended to elevate the fruit rather than dominate it.
