PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Don PX is Toro Albalá's genuine signature wine, and the estate treats each individual vintage with real exclusivity — from the harvest through the raisining process, every year's release develops its own unique personality. The 1993 vintage was harvested during a genuinely brutal Andalusian summer, with temperatures reaching 45°C, the Pedro Ximénez grapes then dried under that same relentless sun using the traditional raisining method to concentrate their sugars before pressing. This is an authentic, artisanal wine in the truest sense — aged in American oak butts and bottled at what the estate calls "the most optimal moment," built genuinely to last for decades in the cellar, and remaining enjoyable for months after opening when kept refrigerated.
Bodegas Toro Albalá traces its own history to 1844, when Antonio Sánchez Prieto first began producing and aging wine in La Noria, near Almería. In 1922, José María Toro Albalá restored a former electric power station in Aguilar de la Frontera, near Córdoba, converting its subterranean tunnels into a naturally ideal environment for wine aging — the origin of the "Eléctrico" name still used on some of the estate's releases today. Every Toro Albalá wine, whether bone dry or intensely sweet, is built entirely from Pedro Ximénez grapes, and the estate's Don PX line remains among the most celebrated expressions of this variety anywhere in Spain.
This exact 1993 vintage earned a genuine 95 Points from Robert Parker, along with the Grand Gold Medal at Mundus Vinis — real, independently judged recognition for a wine one specialist retailer called "an authentic artisanal gem." That same retailer's tasting found "the palate is immense," with the wine's considerable sugar "balanced by a structured acidity that keeps the sweetness in check," concluding with "a never-ending finish" and calling it "highly recommended." For house-style context across nearby vintages, CellarTracker's community has described the wine as "rich, sweet and very fine," with "complex, rich, sweet, burnt toffee touches" where "acid holds it in check," while a detailed tasting of an adjacent vintage found "aromas of dry fig, caramel, coffee, cough syrup, toffee, walnut, roasted almond, prune, raisin," with "some meaty notes" adding real savory depth beneath the sweetness. This is genuinely serious, historically significant Spanish dessert wine — a real showcase of what patient, traditional Pedro Ximénez craft can achieve.
Bodegas Toro Albalá traces its origins to 1844, when Antonio Sánchez Prieto began producing and aging wine in La Noria, near Almería, Spain, focused initially on Fino-style wines. In 1922, José María Toro Albalá restored a former electric power station in Aguilar de la Frontera, roughly 50 kilometers from Córdoba, relocating the winery to this 14,000-square-meter site — its subterranean tunnels providing a naturally ideal environment for aging and preserving wine, the source of the "Eléctrico" name still used for some of the estate's releases.
Don PX Gran Reserva 1993 is made entirely from Pedro Ximénez grapes, harvested in the summer of 1993 amid temperatures reaching 45°C, then dried under the sun using the traditional raisining method to concentrate their natural sugars. Following pressing, the wine was aged in American oak butts using a static oxidative aging system, characteristic of Andalusian maturation, before bottling at the optimal moment. The wine carries D.O.P. Montilla-Moriles designation.

Vintage Wine and Port (extended tasting note):
"The palate is immense and the sugar is balanced by a structured acidity that keeps the sweetness in check. The experience concludes with a never-ending finish. Highly recommended! This wine will keep for many decades, and once opened can be enjoyed for many months when kept in the fridge. An authentic artisanal gem elaborated with Pedro Ximénez grapes, harvested in 1993 with temperatures that reached 45°C, following the traditional grape raising system. An exceptional white wine that has aged in oak butts and has been bottled in the most optimal moment."
CellarTracker community (house-style context, adjacent vintages):
"A wonderful example. Rich, sweet and very fine. Better balanced now than 2 years ago." A separate reviewer notes: "Complex, rich, sweet, burnt toffee touches. Acid holds it in check. A wonderful single vintage wine." A detailed tasting adds: "Appearance: deep colour, looks like espresso. Nose: medium intensity; aromas of dry fig, caramel, coffee, cough syrup, toffee, walnut, roasted almond, prune, raisin, some meaty notes."
Nose
Deep, espresso-like color. Dry fig, caramel, and coffee lead, joined by toffee, walnut, roasted almond, prune, and raisin, with subtle meaty savoriness underneath.
Palate
Immense and richly sweet, with burnt toffee and dried fruit carrying real depth, balanced by structured acidity that keeps the sweetness genuinely in check.
Finish
Never-ending, closing with lingering caramel, coffee, and dried fruit — a genuinely serious, age-worthy finish.
