PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Two hundred thousand years ago, the Volcán de Tequila erupted and covered the landscape of Jalisco with mineral-rich volcanic soil — the geological event that made the entire tequila-producing region possible. Volcán de Mi Tierra takes its name from that eruption, and the Gallardo family at its heart has been growing agave on the land that eruption created since 1774 — five generations before the brand was formally launched in partnership with LVMH's Moët Hennessy division.

The result of that partnership — a fifth-generation Mexican agave family's terroir knowledge combined with the world's leading luxury spirits group's production investment — is a tequila brand operating at the intersection of authenticity and ambition. The credentialing has followed: Double Gold at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition — a unanimous vote from over 60 expert palates — for both the Blanco and Reposado expressions simultaneously. Double Gold at the Agavos Awards in the same cycle. And the Blanco expression earning Best Overall Tequila at the 2025 SFWSC Top Shelf Awards — confirming the house's quality across every expression in the range.

The Reposado is the most complete expression of the Volcán philosophy: the dual-terroir agave blending approach that distinguishes this brand from single-origin producers, rested for exactly 135 days in a blend of American and French oak casks chosen specifically for their complementary character, and bottled at 40% ABV without additives. The result is a reposado of genuine balance: cooked agave and fresh herbs from the dual-terroir blend, honey and delicate campfire smoke from the American oak, and a finesse and floral complexity from the French casks that neither alone provides. No shortcuts. No compromises. No additives.

Origins & Craftsmanship

The Gallardo family has farmed the volcanic slopes beneath the Volcán de Tequila in Jalisco since 1774 — their Hacienda la Gavilana situated at the foot of the dormant volcano whose 200,000-year-old eruption deposited the mineral-rich volcanic soil that still nourishes their agave fields today. When the family partnered with Moët Hennessy LVMH to launch Volcán de Mi Tierra, they brought five generations of agave cultivation knowledge and a specific geographical advantage — access to both Lowland and Highland growing zones within Jalisco — to a collaboration with one of the world's most sophisticated spirits production organizations.

Production takes place at NOM 1523, the brand's dedicated distillery under the oversight of CEO and Co-Founder Santiago Cortina Gallardo, who describes the house philosophy as "complete oversight from agave to bottle — without shortcuts, additives, or compromises." The most distinctive production decision is the dual-terroir blending approach: 100% Blue Weber agave sourced from both the Lowlands (El Valle) and the Highlands (Los Altos) of Jalisco is combined before processing. The Lowland agave — grown in volcanic soil near the Tequila Volcano itself — contributes earthy, herbal, and slightly smoky character alongside the mineral richness of volcanic terroir. The Highland agave — grown in the iron-rich red clay soils at altitude — contributes the brighter, more citrus-forward, floral character that the elevated growing conditions produce. The combination produces a more dimensionally complex agave character than either terroir alone provides.

The piñas are cooked in traditional ovens before fermentation and double distillation. The Reposado then enters its 135-day resting period in a blend of new American and new French oak casks — both used simultaneously rather than sequentially, with the two batches later blended for final balance. American oak contributes the familiar vanilla, honey, and toasted oak warmth. French oak adds a more delicate, floral refinement — the finesse and elegant structure that Moët Hennessy's Champagne and Cognac heritage in French cooperage has informed directly. Bottled at 40% ABV without additives of any kind, in Volcán's distinctive bottle whose base features the shape of the Tequila Volcano in relief.

Critics Reviews

San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2025 — Double Gold Medal Awarded by unanimous vote from over 60 expert palates — the highest distinction available at the world's most prestigious spirits competition. Both the Blanco and Reposado expressions received Double Gold simultaneously in 2025.

Agavos Awards 2025 — Double Gold Medal A second major competition Double Gold in the same cycle — confirming the quality across multiple independent judging panels.

SFWSC Top Shelf Awards 2025 — Best Overall Tequila (Volcán de Mi Tierra Blanco) The house's flagship Blanco expression earned the top tequila honor at the 2025 SFWSC Top Shelf Awards — confirming the overall production quality at the highest level across the entire Volcán range.

Tasting Profile

Nose Delightfully subtle and beautifully balanced — the 135-day resting period's gentle influence apparent without masking the agave character beneath. Cooked agave leads with the warm, honeyed sweetness of traditionally processed Blue Weber piña from two complementary terroirs — earthy and volcanic from the Lowland component, brighter and more floral from the Highland. Honey and a light campfire smoke follow — the American oak's most distinctive contribution, warm and slightly resinous rather than heavily charred. Toasted oak and ripe fruits — blackcurrant, red apple, pineapple — add complexity and lift alongside floral notes from the French oak's contribution. A subtle peppery note and dried fruits thread through the whole. Inviting, balanced, and genuinely aromatic — a nose that communicates terroir before barrel at every approach.

Palate Smooth, rounded, and harmoniously structured — the dual-oak blend's achievement most apparent in the textural completeness and the balance between agave freshness and barrel warmth. Sweet toasted oak and honey arrive first alongside cooked agave — the American oak's immediate contribution framing the agave's natural sweetness generously. Brûléed citrus and pineapple add a vivid, slightly caramelized fruit dimension that is the Lowland/Highland blend's most distinctive palate characteristic — tropical and volcanic simultaneously. A gentle campfire smoke weaves through the mid-palate, subtle and atmospheric rather than assertive. Cinnamon and vanilla from the American oak deepen the spice profile, while light floral notes from the French casks add an elegance and lift that separates Volcán's reposado from purely American oak-aged expressions. Full mouthfeel with a light floral lingering character.

Finish Honeyed, full, and gracefully resolved. The smoke note carries the close most persistently — campfire warmth fading gradually alongside honey and dried fruit sweetness. Nuts and dried fruits — the French oak's contribution most apparent here — provide a refined, slightly toasty close. A smooth finish that lingers pleasantly and reveals the dual-terroir agave character one final time as the flavors settle.

Serving & Occasion

Best enjoyed neat at room temperature or over a single large ice cube — the dual-terroir cooked agave character and the dual-oak smoke and honey notes are most fully expressed without dilution. A few drops of water will deepen the fruit and floral notes from the Highland agave and the French oak contribution. Outstanding alongside carnitas tacos, grilled carne asada, mole negro, aged Manchego, Oaxacan cheese, flan, churros with dulce de leche, and any dish with caramelized, smoky, or volcanic mineral flavors that echo the tequila's own character. An exceptional gifting bottle for the tequila enthusiast who appreciates terroir-driven production — the LVMH heritage and the five-generation Gallardo family story make it one of the most compelling provenance narratives in the premium reposado category.

Cocktail Suggestions

Volcán Old Fashioned (the natural serve) 2 oz Volcán de Mi Tierra Reposado · 1 tsp agave syrup · 2 dashes Angostura bitters · expressed orange peel. Stirred over a large ice rock. The honey, campfire smoke, and toasted oak character of the dual-oak aging make this reposado a natural Old Fashioned tequila — the agave syrup echoes the natural sweetness of the dual-terroir piña, and the orange peel amplifies the brûléed citrus and dried fruit notes on the palate. A tequila Old Fashioned of genuine elegance and volcanic character.

Dual Terroir Margarita 2 oz Volcán de Mi Tierra Reposado · 1 oz fresh lime juice · ¾ oz Cointreau · agave syrup to taste · half-salted rim. Shaken over ice, served in a rocks glass. The dual-oak aging depth and honey character produce a Margarita considerably richer and more layered than standard blanco Margaritas — the French oak's floral elegance adding a dimension that elevates the cocktail format into something more refined and distinctive.

Volcanic Paloma 2 oz Volcán de Mi Tierra Reposado · grapefruit soda · squeeze of fresh lime · pinch of salt. Built over ice in a highball. The campfire smoke and honey from the American oak play against grapefruit's natural bitterness in a Paloma of unusual depth and warmth — the volcanic terroir character of the Lowland agave coming through even in a long drink. Outstanding and deeply Mexican.

Smoked Honey Sour 2 oz Volcán de Mi Tierra Reposado · ¾ oz fresh lime juice · ½ oz honey syrup · mezcal rinse in the glass. Shaken over ice, served up. The honey syrup echoes the American oak's most prominent flavor contribution — lime mirrors the Highland agave's natural citrus brightness — and the mezcal rinse amplifies the campfire smoke note into something dramatically evocative of the tequila's volcanic origins.
