PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Between 1985 and 1992, Wild Turkey released a 12-year-old bourbon in a bottle with gold metallic foil that was, by any contemporary design standard, aggressively of its era — a gleaming, slightly garish metallic label that the bourbon collector community has retrospectively and affectionately named "Cheesy Gold Foil." What the name acknowledges with a smile, the content confirms with reverence: the liquid inside those 1980s and 1990s bottles has become the most sought-after and the most specifically legendary series of Wild Turkey dusties in the American whiskey secondary market. Cherry. Oak. Leather. VinePair calls those three the "Holy Bourbon Trinity" of vintage Wild Turkey. Rare Bird 101 calls them what they are: the reason collectors pay extraordinary sums for 30-year-old bottles with slightly ridiculous labels.

Bruce Russell is Jimmy Russell's grandson. Jimmy Russell is the Master Distiller who worked at Wild Turkey for over 60 years — longer than any other Master Distiller at any single American distillery, a record that stands in the industry as one of its most specifically extraordinary achievements. Jimmy's son Eddie Russell has been Master Distiller alongside him and then alone. Bruce Russell is the third generation, now serving as Associate Master Blender, the man whose notebook from around 2015 contained the idea that has now become the Austin Nichols Archives Collection — a new limited-edition annual series honoring Wild Turkey's most iconic vintage releases.

The Gold Foil Edition is the inaugural release. Sixteen years old. One hundred and twenty proof. Fifty barrels. Non-chill filtered. From Camp Nelson F, D, and E rickhouses. And — confirmed from Rare Bird 101's conversation with Bruce Russell directly — the last international Wild Turkey release that is 100% distilled at the original Austin Nichols Distillery, the still that Jimmy and Eddie Russell used to build every legendary bottle of vintage Wild Turkey. The still that made the Cheesy Gold Foil.

VinePair tasted it and called it a contender for bourbon of the year. The official tasting notes confirm Wild Turkey's signature mature oak "funk," dark fruit, cherry cola, clove, dark honey, and an extremely long finish of peppery spice, brown sugar, and leather. The Whisky Advocate confirmed it. Fifty barrels available to the world. At Blackwell's.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Wild Turkey has been producing bourbon in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky since 1869 — drawing limestone-filtered water from the Kentucky River at one of the most specifically bourbon-productive geological formations in the Commonwealth, the deep limestone shelf whose natural filtration and mineral contribution have defined the Wild Turkey house character across 150 years of continuous production. The distillery is now owned by the Campari Group and operated under the stewardship of the Russell family — three generations of whom have shaped the character of every Wild Turkey expression since Jimmy Russell joined the distillery in 1954.

The Austin Nichols Archives Collection was created by Bruce Russell — Jimmy's grandson, now serving as Associate Master Blender — from a notebook he had maintained since approximately 2015, when Eddie Russell asked Bruce to write down concepts for future limited releases. The Gold Foil Edition concept was always at the top of that list: a modern tribute to the Cheesy Gold Foil, the 1985–1992 vintage 12-year-old that the collector community has elevated to legendary status through their passion for the specific mature oak character and the cherry-leather-oak trinity that those bottles delivered.

To build the Gold Foil Edition, Bruce sourced 50 barrels specifically from Wild Turkey's Camp Nelson rickhouses — the Camp Nelson F, D, and E warehouses whose specific elevation, airflow, and climate conditions create the richness and depth that the Cheesy Gold Foil's most celebrated qualities required. He aged the selected barrels to 16 years — four more years than the original 12-year Cheesy Gold Foil — and bottled at 120 proof rather than the original's 101 proof, allowing the additional age and the higher concentration to deliver the mature oak "funk" and the deep flavor integration that the 1980s vintage was celebrated for, but in a specifically 2026 bourbon context.

The production note that makes this bottle historically singular: Rare Bird 101's conversation with Bruce Russell confirmed that the Gold Foil Edition is the last international Wild Turkey release that is 100% distilled at the original Austin Nichols Distillery still — the copper pot stills that Jimmy Russell and Eddie Russell used to build their careers, to which virtually every legendary bottle of vintage Wild Turkey has a direct connection. The new Wild Turkey distillery has been the primary production facility for years; the original Austin Nichols Distillery stock is now exhausted with this release.

The packaging honors the original: a vintage-style bottle inside an autumnal hunting scene canister inspired by Wild Turkey's origin story and vintage advertising, with gold foil lining inside and a label reminiscent of the original vintage — "less cheesy" in VinePair's characterization, but entirely intentional in its tribute.

Critics Reviews

VinePair (Jordan Mosher): "Pepper with hints of leather, cinnamon sticks, fresh cracked pepper, and Italian amaro (think: Amaro Montenegro) on the nose; the palate offers tons of brown sugar, crème brûlée, some honey, and hints of pipe smoke. The finish is sweet and creamy, with minimal burn despite the proof. This will undoubtedly be one of my contenders for bourbon of the year. For those who never got into dusty drinking, Gold Foil Edition offers a (slightly more reasonable) chance to taste what deeply rich, well-aged bourbon can be."

Rare Bird 101: "The ANA Gold Foil is a Wild Turkey neo-relic. If you're familiar with some of the 2008–2009-distilled 12–14-year-old Camp Nelson F Russell's Reserve Single Barrel selections, imagine that profile at 120 proof with a few additional years of age. Now combine that Camp Nelson prickle with some of the most distinctive qualities that make the revered CGF so lauded: CHERRY, OAK, LEATHER — the Holy Bourbon Trinity. The ANA Gold Foil may not be dusty in profile, though it is dusty-esque."

Wild Turkey / Official tasting notes: "Wild Turkey's signature mature oak 'funk,' dark fruit and mature oak, alongside cherry cola, clove, dark honey, and an extremely long finish of peppery spice, brown sugar, and leather."

Wild Turkey website secondary descriptors: "Mature oak 'funk,' dried fruit, cinnamon, nutmeg, walnut."

Remedy Liquor / Sip Whiskey confirmed production note: "50 barrels. Camp Nelson F, D, and E rickhouses. 16 years. 120 proof. Non-chill filtered. The Gold Foil Edition captures the depth, complexity, and mature oak 'funk' that defined an era and made vintage Wild Turkey the most beloved dusties in American whiskey."

Bruce Russell, Associate Master Blender: "Austin Nichols Archives has been a labor of love, and I'm excited to finally share it with bourbon lovers everywhere. Gold Foil Edition was the perfect bourbon to launch the collection. Inspired by a personal favorite of mine and of many Wild Turkey fans, I drew on everything I've learned from my father and grandfather to create a whiskey that honors the Wild Turkey legacy."

Rare Bird 101 — on historical significance: "According to Bruce, the Gold Foil Edition is the last international Wild Turkey release 100% distilled at the old Austin Nichols Distillery. It's the still that Jimmy and Eddie Russell cut their teeth on, and virtually every legendary bottle of vintage Wild Turkey has a direct connection to it."

Tasting Profile

Nose Deep, complex amber — 16 years in Camp Nelson's specifically celebrated F, D, and E rickhouses producing a color of genuine richness. The nose opens with the quality that makes Wild Turkey's finest aged expressions the most specifically collectible bourbon dusties in America: mature oak "funk" — the slightly woody, slightly wild, specifically Wild Turkey aromatic quality that the Russell family has maintained across generations and that no other distillery in Kentucky produces in quite the same way. Fragrant oak and woody cherry arrive together in the Rare Bird 101 characterization's most specific and the most historically resonant pairing. Dried fruit and warm spice follow. Then the Cheesy Gold Foil's Holy Bourbon Trinity announces itself with complete authority: cherry — vivid, dark, slightly concentrated in the way that 16 years in Camp Nelson rickhouses produces from Wild Turkey's specific rye-forward mash bill. Dark honey adds sweetness. Clove adds warm exotic spice. Cinnamon and nutmeg add baking complexity. Leather adds savory depth. Hints of Italian amaro — Amaro Montenegro specifically in VinePair's most evocative and the most specifically memorable single note — add the most unexpected and the most sophisticated secondary aromatic dimension. The 120-proof intensity is present as a warm, bourbon-assertive volatility that communicates everything about why Camp Nelson F and the original Austin Nichols still produced something the world is now paying $400 to experience.

Palate Tons of brown sugar, crème brûlée, honey, and pipe smoke — VinePair's most accurate and the most broadly appealing characterization confirmed from the first sip. The entry delivers the mature Wild Turkey character at 120 proof with the "Camp Nelson prickle" that Rare Bird 101 identifies as the most specifically Camp Nelson-rickhouse-distinctive quality — a slightly assertive, slightly wild energy that the specific airflow and climate of those warehouses deposits in the whiskey across 16 years of dramatic Kentucky seasonal cycling. The cherry-oak-leather Holy Bourbon Trinity is most apparent here: the cherry is dark and concentrated at the palate's center, the oak is assertive and woody with the specific mature character that 16-year Camp Nelson bourbon produces, and the leather adds the savory, slightly tannic depth that makes this bourbon specifically "dusty-esque" in character. Brown sugar and crème brûlée provide the sweet counterpoint — warm, rich, and deeply satisfying alongside the mature oak funk. Dark honey adds sweetness. Walnut adds nutty secondary richness. The 120-proof warmth builds progressively — present and genuine, but the non-chill filtration's natural oils and the 16-year integration together producing the "minimal burn despite the proof" that VinePair specifically and specifically approvingly confirmed.

Finish Extremely long, peppery, sweet, and leather-persistent. The official characterization's "extremely long finish" is the most specifically and the most accurately stated quality of the entire tasting note — this is a finish of genuinely unusual length and genuinely unusual persistence. Peppery spice carries the close most assertively — Wild Turkey's signature rye-forward spice amplified by 16 years and 120 proof into something genuinely memorable. Brown sugar provides sweetness alongside the pepper. Leather adds the most enduringly satisfying savory quality. Pipe smoke adds the most specifically and the most memorably "vintage bourbon" secondary close note. The finish is sweet and creamy in its resolution — the oak funk having completed its 16-year work into something that is simultaneously assertive and harmonious.

Serving & Occasion

Neat at room temperature in a wide rocks glass — allow 15 minutes of air at 120 proof for the mature oak funk, cherry, and dark honey aromatics to develop fully. The Rare Bird 101 characterization of the "Camp Nelson prickle" is most specifically and most memorably experienced at full proof. A few drops of water opens the cherry and dark fruit notes dramatically while integrating the 120-proof warmth into something particularly harmonious — VinePair's "minimal burn despite the proof" confirmed most completely with water. Outstanding alongside aged hard cheeses, dark chocolate with cherry, smoked meats, a premium cigar alongside the pipe smoke note, and any occasion that merits the last bourbon ever produced at the original Austin Nichols still — the still that Jimmy Russell and Eddie Russell used to build the vintage Wild Turkey that collectors have been chasing for 30 years.

Cocktail Suggestions

Austin Nichols Old Fashioned (the natural home) 2 oz Wild Turkey Gold Foil Edition · 1 tsp Demerara syrup · 2 dashes Angostura bitters · 1 dash cherry bitters · expressed orange peel. Stirred over a large ice rock. Cherry bitters amplify the most specifically and the most historically resonant Wild Turkey flavor note — the Holy Bourbon Trinity's most distinctive element finding its most natural cocktail amplification.

Gold Foil Manhattan 2 oz Wild Turkey Gold Foil Edition · 1 oz sweet vermouth · 2 dashes Angostura bitters · Luxardo cherry. Stirred over ice, served up. The cherry, leather, and mature oak character bridges sweet vermouth in a Manhattan of unusual dusty-esque depth — the 120-proof backbone carrying through vermouth dilution with the confidence of 16 Camp Nelson years.
