PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Springbank 12 Year Old Cask Strength is exactly the kind of release that reminds serious whisky drinkers why this distillery inspires such cult-like devotion — and Batch 29 is a genuinely notable entry in the series. Rather than the sherry-and-rum-influenced blend that's defined several recent batches (Batch 26 and 27 both ran 60% bourbon, 35% sherry, 5% rum), Batch 29 marks a full return to 100% bourbon cask maturation — a style Springbank revisits only every few batches. The result isn't a compromise; it's a revelation. Freed from the heavier influence of sherry, the spirit's true character shines through with striking clarity: brighter, more lifted, and considerably more transparent than the darker, dried-fruit-driven expressions Springbank fans have grown used to in recent years.

The nose opens earthy and mineral-forward, with salt, dried banana, granola, and fresh lemon zest layered against gentle smoke — a world away from the dense dried fruit and dark sugar profile of the sherry-heavy batches. Whisky Guru's own review described it as "think lemon oils, coastal salinity, fresh barley, and clean oak," with the palate delivering exactly the "mineral-forward profile Springbank lovers talk about in hushed tones" — wet stones, sea breeze, subtle chalky dryness, wrapped around vanilla pod, honeyed malt, and gentle spice from genuinely active bourbon wood. Grapefruit syrup, orange pith, pomelo, and white marshmallow round out the palate, closing on cocoa powder, glazed cherries, and salted pretzels with just a hint of lingering smoke.

Two Whisky Bros' independent tasting found "limoncello, burnt wood, almonds and marzipan" on first approach, developing into "whipped cream, icing sugar, doughnuts, dried wood and dunnage warehouse funk," with a mouthfeel that stayed "good and fairly mouth-coating" even at cask strength — their conclusion: "another great release in the Springbank 12 Cask Strength series. If you can find it at RRP, this is excellent value." Bottled at 56.1% ABV, non-chill filtered, and in natural colour, this is Springbank's DNA presented with a genuinely rare degree of precision and transparency — a must-have benchmark bottling for long-time followers, and an ideal, unusually clear introduction for anyone discovering the distillery for the first time.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown remains one of Scotland's most traditional and sought-after whisky producers, carrying out an unusually large share of production entirely on-site — from portions of its own floor malting through distillation, maturation, and bottling. The Springbank house style is defined by a lightly peated, oily, complex, and distinctly maritime character, built on a signature combination of citrus, malt, sea salt, minerality, gentle smoke, and rustic Campbeltown warehouse funk.

Batch 29 of the ongoing 12 Year Old Cask Strength series is a twice-distilled, lightly peated Campbeltown malt matured entirely in bourbon casks — a deliberate departure from the sherry- and rum-inflected casks used in several of the series' most recent prior releases (Batch 26 and 27 both used a 60% bourbon, 35% sherry, 5% rum split; Batch 28 also returned to ex-bourbon casks only). Bottled at cask strength, 56.1% ABV, non-chill filtered and presented in natural colour, with no official outturn figure disclosed for this specific batch.

Tasting Profile

Nose
Earthy and mineral-forward, with salt, dried banana, granola, and fresh lemon zest, joined by gentle smoke. Limoncello, burnt wood, almonds, and marzipan add further complexity, alongside whipped cream, icing sugar, and doughnuts, with dried wood and genuine dunnage warehouse funk underneath.

Palate
Wet stones, sea breeze, and subtle chalky dryness lead, wrapped around vanilla pod, honeyed malt, and gentle spice from genuinely active bourbon wood. Grapefruit syrup, orange pith, pomelo, and white marshmallow build through the mid-palate, alongside dried wood, lime juice, and distinctly Campbeltown funk. Toffee, honey, and tropical fruit add further brightness.

Finish
Cocoa powder, glazed cherries, and salted pretzels close things out, with a lingering hint of smoke. A little spice persists without ever feeling hot despite the considerable cask strength — a clean, precise, and genuinely well-integrated close.
