Old Overholt has spent most of the modern bourbon boom sitting quietly on the bottom shelf — a genuinely historic name, dating back to the early 1800s when German immigrant Abraham Overholt began distilling whiskey in the small town of West Overton, Pennsylvania, but a brand that Jim Beam largely let coast for decades as an inexpensive, unremarkable rye. That's been changing fast. After a limited 2020 release put an 11-Year-Old, 92.6-proof Overholt into just Ohio and Pennsylvania and quietly impressed enthusiasts, Beam committed in 2023 to an annual cask-strength special release — starting with a 10-year-old drawn entirely from a single warehouse. This new bottling continues that trajectory: the age statement climbs to 11 years, and rather than pulling from just one rickhouse, Beam's blending team drew barrels from four separate warehouses at the Clermont, Kentucky campus — M, J, F, and 5 — specifically selected to best showcase the full range of the Overholt profile.

The whiskey itself was distilled in the fall of 2012, matured for a full eleven years, and bottled straight from the barrel without dilution at 107.4 proof — notably lower than the previous year's 121-proof release, a decision the blending team stood behind directly. "The blending team really liked how these barrels were maturing, and we feel that the final product, while at a 'lower than average cask strength proof,' came out beautifully," one team member told Robb Report. "The intention is to seek out the best possible barrels for super limited and special releases such as this, and it just so happened to land at a low proof, and I think we were all pleasantly surprised by it." This remains the standard Beam rye recipe — just over 51% rye in the mashbill — rather than the considerably more rye-heavy 80% recipe used in the separate A. Overholt Monongahela expression, but eleven years of aging and full cask strength give this whiskey a depth and intensity the standard release simply doesn't carry.

Official tasting notes describe vanilla and tobacco on the nose, followed by allspice, sweet vanilla, caramel, and charred oak on the palate, closing with a full-bodied finish carrying lingering rye spice. The Barrel Tap's extended notes found a dark, deep amber whiskey with golden hues, "sweet mellowed oak, vanilla, and caramel balanced by black pepper and cinnamon toast spice" on the nose, developing into "a powerful burst of spice — black pepper, cinnamon, and baking spices, complemented by notes of cherries, green peppercorn, sweet caramel, and vanilla" on the palate, with a long, lingering finish of classic rye spice, vanilla, and brown sugar. This is a genuinely limited release, expected around 170 barrels — enough to reach a meaningful number of shelves, but not so much that it will be there for long.

This 11 Year Cask Strength release is the second entry in what Beam has established as an annual special-release program for the brand, following a 10-year-old cask strength edition released in 2023 that was drawn entirely from a single warehouse (Warehouse V) and comprised roughly 170 barrels. For this release, the whiskey was distilled in the fall of 2012 and matured for eleven years across four separate warehouses at Beam's Clermont, Kentucky campus — designated M, J, F, and 5 — a deliberate choice by the blending team to draw on multiple rickhouse locations that together best represent the full character of the Overholt style.
