Why is Whiskey So Popular?

Whiskey has been around for centuries, and it's no wonder it's so popular. It has a long history and unique taste that appeals to people all over the world. It's all about the complexity of the flavors, the unique smells, and the care and attention to detail that goes into each bottle. At Blackwell's, we understand the timeless appeal of whiskey and why we always make sure to offer the best selection of whiskey for sale.

One of the most common questions we get asked by whiskey enthusiasts is, can whiskey go bad? While we’re not suggesting you guzzle your drink in one sitting, the answer is yes and no!

  • If you haven't opened the bottle, you can breathe a sigh of relief as your prized whiskey will be just as good to drink years from now as it is today. Unopened, well-stored whiskey can last lifetimes.
  • Store whiskey by standing the bottles upright in a cool, dark place and regularly tightening the lids, caps or corks.
  • Once you crack that cap, the clock starts ticking. Scientific reports state that a half-bottle of opened whiskey can last up to two years. But if it's mostly been drunk, with a quarter or less left in the bottle, it will sadly expire in about six months due to oxidation.
  • You can extend its shelf life by redistributing open bottles into smaller bottles with less oxygen then tightly cap them.

The Origin and Distinction

Whiskey is one of the world’s most popular spirits, but the two spellings, whiskey and whisky, have led to centuries of deliberation as to its true country of origin. It can be hard to tell which one is which. Then throw the word Scotch into the mix and it becomes even more confusing. Traditionally, whisky is from Scotland, Canada and Japan, while whiskey with an “e” is native to America and Ireland. The difference isn’t just linguistic, it’s also based on production techniques and flavor profiles, which produce a unique Irish whiskey. Some countries, like the United States, Japan, and India, have embraced whiskey production, adding their own unique flavors to the mix.

Exploring Whiskey Varieties

The world of whiskey is vast and full of different flavors, aromas, and cuisines. American whiskey and bourbon stands out for its sweet and strong taste, while Indian whiskey is known for its subtle notes. At Blackwell's Wines & Spirits, we are passionate about our carefully chosen selection of whiskeys, so there’s something for everyone, including Japanese whiskey. Whether you like the smoky notes of scotch or the smoothness of single malt, we have something for every taste at our online whiskey store.

Types of Whiskey

Understanding the different types of whiskey is essential for appreciating the fine distinction of this spirit. Scotch, known for its peaty character, differs from single-grain whiskey, which boasts a milder profile. Blended whiskeys offer a combined blend of flavors, while single-cask and single-malt whiskeys highlight the intricacies of their unique origins.

Countries Known for Best Whiskey Production

Whiskey is a global business, and some countries have earned a reputation as whiskey powerhouses. Scotland is home to some of the world’s finest whiskies, with a rich history and a wide variety. The United States, home to bourbon and Tennessee whiskey, has a strong history of whiskey making, while Japan is renowned for its craftsmanship. Here at Blackwell’s, we’re part of your global whiskey journey, and we offer a wide selection of Canadian whiskey and flavored whiskey, that reflects the best of what these whiskey-producing countries have to offer.

Price Range and Quality

At Blackwell’s Wines & Spirits, we recognize that whiskey enthusiasts come from a variety of backgrounds, as do their tastes and budgets. Our range of whiskey for sale offers so many options, ranging from an affordable price point (USD$8.50) to high-end, premium bottles (USD$14,000), as well as simple whiskey to premium-aged whiskey. When it comes to buying whiskey online, you can count on Blackwell’s to deliver an exceptional whiskey experience.

Whiskey in America

Whiskey has a long history in the United States, with some of America’s most iconic whiskies being bourbon and rye. Bourbon whiskey, made in Kentucky, is best known for its rich bourbon notes and smooth finish. Rye whiskey, on the other hand, has a spicier flavor profile.
